Overview

Far from Chicago, hairdresser Gina Norris has relocated to Atlanta with her daughter and has quickly established herself as a rare talent in her profession. But after repeatedly butting heads with her shady, over-the-top boss, Jorge, Norris sets out to create her own salon -- even snagging a few of Jorge's employees and clients. Now, Jorge will do anything to shut her down.

It's like the producers sat back and said "okay, we want another Barbershop movie, but for women!" So as a result it ends up being a regurgitation of the first 2 movies it's spun off from. While it's not as fresh, and the characters aren't as charming, it's still fun enough.

Beauty Shop is a spin-off comedy from the Barbershop film series featuring Queen Latifah as Gina who is trying to pursue her dream of running her own salon. The film itself is a very simple one and it does have some fairly funny moments but also some sweet moments. Latifah holds the whole film together. I don't know what Kevin Bacon was doing in this movie but his irritating accent just did not work for me. Some of the jokes were hit and miss. The jokes involving a white woman working in a salon full of black woman was quite funny at first but grew old real quick. The moments with Djimon Hounsou were some standout scenes. He is always a great watch and offered this film some balance between being over the top and feeling relatable by giving us some quieter scenes. The health inspector scenes were just too cliché and they did not pay them off in a satisfying way. They felt kind of pointless by the end of the film. Not a bad film, but not sure I would ever watch again. 5/10
