The Lon Chaney, Jr. classic Universal Monster Movie The Wolf Man is a provocative tale of a man’s struggle against fate. While courting a young shopkeeper Larry Talbot is attacked by a werewolf, and is told by gypsies that he has taken on the werewolf curse and will become a killer. Co-starring Claude Rains and Bela Lugosi, the film has a strong cast. But the script is weak, and does a poor job of showing Talbot’s struggle to come to terms with his affliction. And, Chaney too has difficulty bringing depth to the Talbot character. Still, the make-up effects are quite good, and the score is able to create an impressive atmosphere mood. While it has some flaws, at its core The Wolf Man is a compelling and frightful film.

The Wolf Man is a werewolf story from 1941. I mean, the expectations can't be too high, right? It's a good thing it's so short because it's a film about werewolves... made in 1941.

visually this was great, i adore werewolves so that was fun, but i think the movie itself is a little flat to me

Just a classic monster movie from the 1940s that is still good to watch. It has inspired many future movies of the kind, so watching it gives you a good base reference. Have fun.

Not really the movie for me--boring story, dull acting, lacking in horror of any kind. The biggest problem is with the character of Talbot (and the acting of Chaney Jr, ugh.) He's a super creep with no redeeming characteristics, so there's no sense of identification possible from an audience perspective. I didn't feel sad for his desperation, I was just ready to be done with it.

"The Wolf Man" stands out thanks to its classic graveyard scenes, fog shrouded forests, and the performance of Lon Chaney Jr. Chaney plays a man cursed. He doesn't understand why it's happening to him. He's certain that he is actually a wolf man and those around him and their disbelief his outlandish story tears him apart. He really sells a man equally tormented by both the fear of his moonlit transformations and the slipping away of his sanity. Speaking of that transformation, it is underwhelming as this movie was made nearly 70 years ago. But, the sympathetic performance of Chaney makes up for this shortcoming. "The Wolf Man" isn't scary in the least, but its strong story made it the movie that brought werewolf lore into the mainstream.

I am a big fan of the Universal monster films and this is definitely one of my favorite monster films. The story is easy to follow and the music really compliments the story and the atmosphere. However, some scenes were predictable. That didn'#39;t take away the fact that this is a great movie. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is a fan of classic cinema and classic horror in particular.

“Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night, May become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.” The Wolf Man truly is Lon Chaney Jr's baby. Every time I rewatch Universal's the Wolf Man I still find myself as entertained as the first time I watched it. Lon Chaney truly owned the character and the film. I love the foggy scenes at night, I love the cast. Maria Ouspenskaya is amazing as Maleva, Bela Lugosi is always fun to see especially when he rocks his only scene, Evelyn Ankers as Gwen is a great early scream queen and we even get treated with some Claude Rains! The story is simple but it works. It's amazing to see Larry change from happy go lucky creepy man to a man who's mighty depressed when he finds out what he has become. I also love the fact the he is the only one who played the role of Larry Talbot/Wolf Man in the early Universal Monster scene. I must be honest though, I've never seen the other times he appeared as the Wolf Man even though I freaking love these early Universal Horror movies. So maybe this will be the year I'll dive deeper in these fun movies. Anyway The Wolf Man still stand the test of time and if you remotely love movies, the 70 minutes it takes to watch this classic is a must!
