Overview

Two journalists set out to document their friend's journey to reunite with his estranged sister. They track her to an undisclosed location where they are welcomed into the remote world of "Eden Parish," a self-sustained rural utopia composed of nearly two hundred members and overseen by a mysterious leader known only as "Father." It quickly becomes evident to the newcomers that this paradise may not be as it seems. Eden Parish harbors a twisted secret. What started as just another documentary shoot soon becomes a fight for survival.

'gt;Creepy Caroline: *"We have nothing to hide."* *Midsommar* but more realistic and thought-provoking. I can't say the found footage format really made this story any better or scarier, it could've been made the old fashioned way and be just as good. I was fully captivated and intrigued from beginning to end, nothing new really but I always find cult movies to be fascinating and this one sticks out from the rest. Good little interviews with the folk that felt very grounded and almost sold me at the idea of going to live over there... after that wild third act, i'll pass! Very unsettling, gruesome gory kills, very dark and tragic, and one hell of a strong performance from Gene Jones as Father.

Mockyentary that can't quite make up it's mind if it is found footage or not. Plot holes and soundtrack suggests it is not. It's almost like a dramatisation of a mockumentary, if that makes any sense.

This is an awesome movie. But there's one thing that's makes it unrealistic is the majority is black. Ain't no way black people would get involve in some religious cult like that. 😀

A competently made documentary-style folk horror. This film is very clearly influenced by the Jonestown Massacre incident where a cult leader convinced people to commit mass suicide. I don't think the film itself is really anything that special but it's still entertaining and thought provoking nonetheless. As a found footage, it suffers from some of the issues that most films of the sub-genre do but what makes it horrifying in a very real way is when you taking into consideration that it's based on real events. Even if you can see something coming from miles away, it doesn't make this film any less unsettling. There's a great escalation of suspense and some truly horrific moments which left me uneasy the whole time. Amazing performances from everyone involved, especially Gene Jones as a charismatic and scary cult leader.

Like wearing shorts in March, it doesn'#39;t cover much, and what it does cover isn'#39;t that hot. Still... Found Footage horror on a Friday night! Sure, this is less a found footage film than it is a true crime reenactment of the Jonestown massacre but... Found Footage horror on a Friday night!

Just another Ti West Borefest

An utter failure on every level of filmmaking.

I don'#39;t think I ever buy into the relatively success Ti West had with House of the Devil... This is Jonestown the movie x VICE advertisement that wasn'#39;t very exciting to watch for me.

Generous 3.0 here. I really like Ti West. House of the Devil was awesome, and Innkeepers is one of my favorite horror movies from the past few years. Knowing about the Jonestown massacre makes this one extra-creepy, and the short running time works in its favor. Gene Jones slays. Too many missteps though. The Vice angle is the only excuse I can think of for using music (they score/soundtrack their docu-shorts, I'm pretty sure) and it makes the found-footage thing way too plastic. Maybe it's just me but I can't stand pretty much any kind of "Be careful out there boys: you wouldn't wanna walk into the wrong place..." horror trope dialogue. Most everything here is coming from a good place; you can tell Ti West really cares about what he does (tho never moreso than with Innkeepers), but this probably needed more time to simmer/bubble around in his head. Can't help but notice it's his first movie produced by Eli Roth. I have this vision of them meeting a few months before production, getting drunk in Eli's apartment and coming up with the idea. Still better than most horror movies churned out
