First, here's some trivia about the movie's name: there is a move in BJJ called the rear naked choke, in Portuguese it is called mata leao, which translates to lion killer. I wanted to like this movie, but it has a lot of problems. It's well written, but it needed better actors. The camera work is hit or miss. There is terrible ADR through half the film. The music is intolerable. The biggest issue is with our lead - who looks like a young Mark Wahlberg - he was clearly hired for his physique, because his acting leaves something to be desired. Given the subject matter, one might think this would be an action movie, but it is a drama, centered around a love story. Furthermore, there are some heavy topics within that the cast, and crew, just couldn't hold. _Redbelt_(2008) is still the undisputed movie about jiu jitsu. Such a missed opportunity here.
