Great cinematic, great actors, dumb and pointless plot - especially the ending. I want 2 hours of my life back!

Spoilers

If you’re expecting some big revelation at the end of this movie, don’t. It’s not so much about the beginning or the end as it is about the journey. It was beautifully shot and the locations were astounding. The score was some seriously tense and wonderful undercurrent that completely set the mood for me. In-fact, about the score; I loved how it would peak up above the scenes from time to time with a quick cut and instant fade to black. It gave the movie a sort of episodic feel and was great at building suspense. I enjoyed it even if it didn’t have a big closure at the end.

There'#39;s something haunting about the chill of remote northern locations in film. The Grey, The Revenant, and Wind River are high up in my list of preferred movies. Hold the Dark is there with them, if only just. If you'#39;re looking for something that is paced, haunting, and cold, this fits the bill. Best viewed in the dead of night with the windows open. It might not answer all the questions you have, but it knowingly advises through one main character'#39;s dialogue that the answers and explanations are there, whether you are privy to them or not. I can'#39;t be more specific about if this is your sort of film without spoiling the contents within. I recommend it, not as a good time, but as a dark time. 8/10

What'#39;s happenned with this? It begins very good, interesting and beautiful, but the plot seems to fall apart till the end. Maybe I need to watch again. :\

Not bad but not great, I had high expectations because Green Room was so good and I'#39;m a little let down. It has some beautifully shot Alaskan scenery but it is slow besides that one big scene. The story is a little too ambiguous for me.

Comments says read the book and you will understand everything, thank you but i watch a movie. If tha movie fails to add explanations and go to an artistic crap just so "you didn't get it ? you are not smart go watch a marverl movie" is is not my fault. I'm all for winter and majestic scenes from Alaska and snow and slow paced films but my god deliver me something. This was slow as hell, boring, didn't care about anything and didn't understood anything other that everyone was crazy. Fantastic worthless ending!

Wtf? I really, really wanted to like this film. The acting is great, the scenery is beautiful and the story seemed like it was going somewhere. But nooooo. It has to be artsy. I wonder if the book conveyed a message that they couldn’t get to in the movie. At the core, it ends up looking like the stereotypical “natives vs the outsiders” plus lore. Very disappointed.

Made absolutely no sense what so ever. I'm sure if you read the book it would be helpful. Just skip it and find another movie

B A D !!! don't waste your time...

This cold and menacing film will keep you on your toes. Go in expecting the unexpected and you might have a good time. People have complained about the movie'#39;s ambiguity, but I kind of liked that. Why should we be spoon fed plot exposition when we can think about it ourselves? And besides, there are clues scattered throughout the film that will add some coherence to the plot - you just have to look and listen carefully (or Google the movie, if you can'#39;t be bothered sitting through the film again).

Slow, dark (as in low light) and the plot does not make any sense at all.

Quite a slow movie, and when things do happen they seem unnecessary and dragged out, even still.

completely dark didn'#39;t enjoy it kinda waste my time on this one it is like watching a grandma walking in slow motion

Thought it was going to be good but I just ended up confused

I have... **No** idea what I just watched... But that bit in the middle was like something straight out of a _Payday 2_ heist, so I'm cool. _Final rating:★★★ - I liked it. Would personally recommend you give it a go._

***Unpredictable bleak Alaskan adventure, mystery, thriller*** An author and wolf expert (Jeffrey Wright) arrives at a remote village in Alaska to help rid the town of a wolf problem that has resulted in a few dead children. Riley Keough plays the troubled mother and Alexander Skarsgård her taciturn husband coming home from Iraq. James Badge Dale appears as the local sheriff while Julian Black Antelope is on hand as a curious AmerIndian named Cheeon. "Hold the Dark" (2018) is a combination mystery/drama/adventure/thriller/horror. It’s original, unpredictable and dead serious with elements of movies like “The Grey” (2011), “Runaway Train” (1985), “Wendigo” (2001), “The Frozen Ground” (2013), “The North Star” (1996), “Joyride” (1977) and “The Edge” (1997), not to mention a “Apocalypse Now” (or Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness) and even a little from the “Friday the 13th” franchise, albeit without the goofiness. Imagine if the band Agalloch made a movie and that’s pretty much “Hold the Dark” (there’s even a snippet from an Agalloch-like band in the movie). It’s based on the book by William Giraldi and some viewers have complained that key revelations weren’t obvious enough in the film. Well, I never read the book and wasn’t able to figure out these revelations, but this didn’t prevent me from appreciating this artistic nigh masterpiece. Afterward, I looked-up the revelations and they put the pieces of the puzzle together; yet the clues are all there (in the movie) if you watch closely. But, again, not being able to figure out every detail did NOT prevent me from valuing this great movie. The film runs 2 hours, 5 minutes and was shot in Alberta, Canada (Lethbridge & Calgary), and Morocco. GRADE: A-/A
