Like the doc this spawned from, this movie holds affection and sympathy for the Beales, not mockery, and this is what carries it. Lange and Barrymore commit to these roles and the essences of these women, and to the codependent, flawed but very real love and devotion they had to each other. The only people who really understood and loved each other at a time and world made to stuff them in a box. They chose their own prison. And in the end, Edie got her immortality, from documentary to film to theater to parody.
