Great creative story. I think it'#39;s mainly for kids, but this was a great movie overall.
I didn´t know this was based on a book when I choose to watch this but the story had youth-novel printed all over it with two young protagonists. Unfortunately this is only the first part of a story that produced 4 novels in total. The movie wasn´t a success though generating below 20m$ while costing 55m$ which in Hollywood closes the door for sequels. Which is a shame I guess because of all the youth novel movie adaptations I saw this is one of the best with a story that not only relates to children. They didn´t overstress it in making it a 2.5 hour movie and the production in general is really good. But it works as a standalone movie with an open ending that leaves you with either your imagination or you take the route of reading the books.
Started out very promising, loved the idea of having to keep a secret for 200 years and passing it on (amazing scene by the way, as the years count down and you see the hands age while passing on the case). But overall it never really got me very excited, I think there was more potential and as I understood from reviews, the book has much more depth to it. Still an enjoyable movie, especially for a younger audience, I'd think.
City of Ember (2008) - ❤x7 How could they possibly assume that after 200 years all the escape mechanics would still work, and the tunnels would not have collapsed, and the rickety wooden water chute flume would still be standing and that the exit/entrance to the tunnels would not have collapsed or been covered up by a landslide, or earthquake etc. . . Other than that - I found this to be an entertaining movie. I do feel it could have been a little longer. Some story parts expanded. But still entertaining. How I rate: 1-3 ❤ = seriously! don't waste your time 4-6 ❤ = you may or may not enjoy this 7-8 ❤ = I expect you will like this too 9-10 ❤ = movies and TV shows I really love!
Film 87 (Goal: 300) of 2024 A fun family friendly YA adventure film. It starts a little slow as it builds it's world but the last 20 minutes are a lot of fun. Sure, the CGI is a bit ropey in some areas but the charm of Saoirse and Harry among the other established actors helps to drive this. Unfortunately it's an overlooked film and the story isn't superb enough to drive in a new audience. I would love to see this as a television series, in the vain of the recent Percy Jackson series.
I hope I wasn’t the only one wondering why they didn’t just light torches. Why wouldn’t they throw more than one rock down at the end?
Felt like a lot of familiar ideas. It was more fun than I thought it would be. Good family movie.
Not really the same as the book. I first read the book and saw the movie. I don'#39;t like this movie version. The meaning of true story is lost in this movie. The book isn'#39;t just a teenage story ... :-( I'#39;m not happy ... and that'#39;s the real reason why the other books haven'#39;t been filmed and this movie has fallen... :-( But I really like the book series!!!
Greatly crafted setting, reminds me of Bioshock, has that steampunk vibe. Movie is really slow,
you basically watch 90 minutes for 3 kids to get to the surface of a post apocalyptic earth
. The two main characters are somewhat likeable but generic, I really enjoyed the addition of Bill Murray as the corrupt mayor of the city.

With the future of the planet in grave danger, some far-sighted builders decide that it’s best for humanity to build a subterranean city into which they can retreat. It’s got to be something self-sustaining as they are going to be down there for a couple of centuries. They do provide exit instructions, but over time they get lost and so nobody knows that maybe it’s time to resurface. Now, though, the engineering is starting to give up the ghost and that means power and food are becoming rationed. The mayor (Bill Murray) is hopelessly out of his depth/obsessed with his own position and the chief electrician “Sul” (Martin Landau) is running out of ideas so it falls to the unlikely pairing of youngsters “Lina” (Saoirse Ronan) and “Doon” (Harry Treadaway) to rekindle the population’s appetite to get some fresh air. Luckily, she has a box left to her by her grandmother and as their jobs involve them clambering around the city’s gubbins, they can begin to explore in earnest. This isn’t something they can advertise - the mayor and his thugs will not brook any disenchantment in their city, even if the lights are all about to go out. Now having to fight a rearguard action too, can they discover a way out - and even if they do, is there anything left? I liked the creative style of this film and the fantasy is well explored and unravelled by the engaging partnership of Treadaway and Ronan amidst a city of colourful visual effects. Murray hams up nicely and there’s just the hint of menace from the Dickensianly monikered “Barton Snode” (Toby Jones) to keep the adventure moving along quickly for a ninety minutes of passages, pipe works and grand scale machinery. If you’re looking for complex psychology here then don’t bother, it’s all simply presented family fayre with a cast that look like they are enjoying telling us a story that looks great and vibrates when it’s meant to.
