Sometimes you just want a bit of nostalgia. If you've watched Russel T Davies' Doctor Who series with Eccelston, this'll feel familiar, for all the good and bad that brings. In essence, it feels like a precursor to the series. It has the same humanistic and often heavy handed themes, the same sprawling and divine music composed by the same Murray Gold, the beating heart about to burst and the wild misfires. And most of all, an exemplary cast that ties it all together.

Eccelston is my favorite Doctor and one of my favorite actors for a reason, and he's in fine form here. He always finds the humanity in his roles, and that is vital for this one. He is the Second Coming, and he has to harness the same dual humanity and divinity as Jesus the carpenter. He feels like a common working man, trying his best, at once elated and terrified by finding his new found purpose. Lesley Sharp is every bit his equal. The things she does with her eyes are spellbinding. There's an electricity and authenticity to their scenes together, and it's where the film shines most.

Where the film falters is it's edges. There's a line about why Eccleston doesn't 'fix' his friend's cousin's daughter's autism that almost made me quit watching right then and there. The film raises a lot of interesting questions it doesn't have time to answer, and it doesn't know how to rein it in. And the ending- speaking as an atheist- is a bit too New Age, which isn't helped by its sole focus on Christianity and using it to talk about religion as a whole. There's a lost nuance and finesse.

Ultimately, if all you want is a great Eccleston performance, like I did, you'll be satisfied. Otherwise, you're not missing much if you skip it.
