Overview

SummerSlam (1992) was the fifth annual SummerSlam. It took place on August 29, 1992 at Wembley Stadium, London, England but was aired in the United States on August 31. The pay-per-view featured two main event matches. In the first, The Ultimate Warrior challenged Randy Savage for the WWF Championship. The Warrior won the match by count-out but did not win the title. In the other main event, The "British Bulldog" Davey Boy Smith pinned Bret Hart to win the WWF Intercontinental Championship. The WWF Tag Team Championship was also defended, as The Natural Disasters retained the championship belts in their match against the Beverly Brothers. One of the heavily promoted matches on the undercard was between Shawn Michaels and Rick Martel. The match, which had a special stipulation that the wrestlers could not hit each other in the face, ended in a double count-out. The WWF considers the crowd to be the third largest live audience ever to attend a WWF/E event, with 80,355 in attendance.

It was missing a lot with Gorilla Monsoon being replaced by Vince McMahon at the mic. Additionally, the matches seemed to be lacking the furor and "spark" that they normally have. Not sure if that was due to jetlag or just a bunch of wrestlers that really didn't have their hearts into their respective matches. Even though I knew the outcome of the match between "Macho Man" Randy Savage and Ultimate Warrior (Warrior never held the belt again after his brief stint at Wrestlemania VI) I was still looking forward to this match...until Warrior came out with that ridiculous singlet on with painted-on abs. That should have been a harbinger of what was to come...because the rest of that match was as ludicrous as that singlet was. And yes, I realize it's all scripted, played-out, and staged but still...in this case, the performance stunk every bit as bad as the "storyline" did. It was just awful. That match between Bret Hart and The British Bulldog had all the ingredients for a top-notch performance but it just seemed like there were a lot of botched moves and forgetful moments between two guys that were at the top of their game at the time of this event. Overall, it was still enjoyable (mildly, but yes, enjoyable) for those of us who enjoy rewatching the old glory days of WWF but this was far from the best performance the WWF/WWE ever put together. It was a sad foreshadowing of what was to come.

A classic Summer Slam of a golen era of wrestling. It is a joy to watch with all the colorful and entertaining wrestlers, even if the wrestling itself does not always live up to standarts. First we had a fairly decent tag team match between Legion of Doom and Money INC Nailz vs Virgil sort of happened. Shawn Michaels vs Rick Martel was good....well when they were wrestling anyway. Ultimate Warrior vs Randy Savage was wonderful. It was a pure joy to watch these two legends in one ring. Undertaker showed off his awesomeness vs Kamala And last but not least by any means, we have on of The Greatest Summerslam main events and one of the reasons why I love this event so much. Bret Hart vs British Bulldog for the Intercontinental Championship. The storyline behind it was great, the wrestling was pure genious (it was Bret Hart after all), the match was suspensful, the crowd was on fire and the ending really sealed the deal on this match as one of the greatest matches in Summer Slam history. This match truly makes this PPV. While the Main Event was a classic, I still can't give this PPV a rank higher than 8, because most of the other matches did not really surprise me as much.
