I'm trying to be fair to this show but this had several things going against it (for me) : first, Kaya Scodelario just does not do it for me, never has. Second, bipolar disorder is so incredible tough to portray on screen, either you do it right and it gets hard to relate to the characters (and by relate, I mean, just find them sympathetic even in their struggles) or do it wrong and it's annoying because bipolar disorder is a beast and should not be sugarcoated. This show does it well, which made it hard for me to root for Katarina and Carol. I wanted to scream at the screen so many times.

However, this means that the show does what it means to do. It's well known that the ice skating world is tough on the skaters, like ballet is supposed to be and it's not hard to understand why. The show does a great job depicting these struggles and also a great job in showing how mental illnesses hinder everyday life.

The romance did not do it for me. And honestly, I think it was just a prop to add to Katarina's struggles.

At its core, this is a very personal drama, a family drama and not so much a romance drama, nor a ice skating show. It has all its elements but this is what you get if you power through it.
