To me season 2 is even better than season 1.

Constant high quality, great plot & of course amazing cinematography by Martin Scorsese makes B.E. an another epic HBO series!

Honestly the best series of all time. I have yet to watch the Sopranos so this may be premature but it is absolutely better than all of the other shows that people say are GOAT. It's better than The Wire, Breaking Bad, House of Cards, and Mad Men combined. The acting, writing, directing, thematic value, sound editing, and historical relevance (as well as modern relevance) are strung together impossibly well in this masterpiece of a show. The only way I can see someone not liking this show is either if they have no understanding of film techniques or they just do not pay attention. Word to the wise though, pay VERY CLOSE ATTENTION to the first episode if you just begin watching it. The first episode is the most complicated episode of all time, it's practically its own movie, literally every single scene has relevance to the larger story.

@seanmsu Great, great show, but I just want to point out that "The only way I can see someone not liking this show is either if they have no understanding of film techniques.." this statement is rather dumb. Ferraris are incredible feats of engineering techniques and artform, but that doesn't mean I have to like them (I don't). Or rather, the greatest cinematographer on the planet could film a freshly defecated turd, that doesn't make it a good turd.

@seanmsu i agree, and that's because it's Scorsese quality. Those other shows can just bow down to this

@adonael i think you rather missed the point. It was about the entire production... Not the "cinematography".... If you read the part where they mentioned the acting, writing, directing, sound editing etc etc... (I would add the dialogue) This is why this is a well made show, and the story only is able to be made this way because of those things. This is an art form, whether anyone wants to admit it or not

Brilliantly-written. All of it. Brilliantly-made - the decors, the acting, the soundtrack. It transfers you back in time. Genius work.

Funny, I usually adore the combination HBO does about the music & imagery on their tv shows, but the Boardwalk one... I don't know, I don't find quite as appealing as the others.

Season 1 - 10/10
Season 2 - 8/10
Season 3 - 5/10
Season 4 - 3/10
Season 5 - 1/10

Just hated season 5 and wish I hadn't watched it. If there had been more episodes I wouldn't have finished it. It ended the only way it could and that's just a shame.

So can someone tell me what the point of the Van Alden storyline is? Since Season 2 he is just wandering around.... so unimportant that he didn't even appear in the last episodes of Season 3.

Are you serious? What are you expecting to happen or not happen? He has the most dramatic story line of all the characters. If you remember from way back he is the product of the everyone elses actions and environment. He had a plan and and goal (a wife, and a job) and got devoured by Atlantic City. He is so dynamic that he can go in any direction and influence or effect just about any other character or storyline. Think about everyone he has been involved with.

Van Alden's story is yet another form of the story that perforates nearly every character in the show. He goes through different stages where new challenges lead him toward crime/sin and he continually reevaluates who he is as a human being and how much sin he is willing to live with. He starts out as a zealot for the law dedicated to destroying the mob and becomes a criminal underling for the most brash and violent of all of the mobsters. He has an extremely meaningful story.

Brillant show - it's like a time travel back to 1920.
Thanks to Martin Scorsese a perfect combination of stories,sets,acting,...
I never regret a minute of watching it.

For everybody who loves the opening credits as much as I do (IMO: the best intro since years), here is the Boardwalk Empire theme song:
