He began his career as an assistant director, collaborating with notable filmmakers such as Pierre Schoendoerffer on La 317e Section (1965), Claude Chabrol on Marie-Chantal contre docteur Kha (1965), Jean-Luc Godard on Pierrot le fou (1965), and Jacques Rivette on La Religieuse (1966).
