I really wanted to like this. After The Invisible Man, Leigh Whannell feels like the perfect man to continue the Universal monster movies.

It starts of really well, the opening is strong in suspense.
The moment the family crashes down the mountain with their U-Haul is when it loses that build up instantly and it turns into a regular being-hunted-by-a-monster-movie. Which is a disappointment, because I was looking forward to a great psychological thriller where a man slowly turns into the animal.

I would be more forgiving if the make-up was better done. Clearly, he wanted the Lon Cheney Wolf Man feeling to it, but even that looks better than this modern iteration of it. In my eyes, it looks more like a pig-man than a wolf-man, except for the teeth. I totally understand not wanting to rely in cgi effects. But I feel like the monster was not... monstery enough to feel threatening.

In fact, it just makes it look really silly. It's just not convincing that this... wolf-man creature can move and is the utter threat it's made out to be. There was so much potential too. The family dynamic would have been amazing to play out against this background, but is lost immediately. The silent stalking and rumbling sound without seeing the creature is also amazing, but underused. That feeling of being hunted in the forest by it would have been amazing to see.
Alas. It did not make me happy or excited and sat through the movie in disappointment.
