Where to Watch

Overview

After the death of his mother, the evil mutant wizard Blackwolf discovers some long-lost military technologies. Full of ego and ambition, Blackwolf claims his mother's throne, assembles an army and sets out to brainwash and conquer Earth. Meanwhile, Blackwolf's gentle twin brother, the bearded and sage Avatar, calls upon his own magical abilities to foil Blackwolf's plans for world domination -- even if it means destroying his own flesh and blood.

I was genuinely hoping a rewatch would reveal some hidden quality to Wizards I hadn't seen before. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. What an uncharacteristically boring movie from this creator. The story and characters and themes all feel a step below his usual capabilities as a whole. It's not a miserable watch or anything, but a very dull one. The movie's most notable quality is it's occasional memeability; I mean, this is the first PG animated movie where I heard a major, heroic character scream "slut" at the top of his lungs. That's something, right?

Wizards is the only animated movie I can think of where I spend half the time unsure if I’m looking at a stylistic effect or an unfinished shot. Writer/director Ralph Bakshi cuts between fully-animated character and action bits, sepia still drawings accompanied by voice over narration, rotoscoped battle scenes, and lots of tinted footage from Nazi propaganda movies. The story is thin, it feels like some vital linking material was never shot and the voice acting is variable but the kaleidoscopic style kept me watching through dead spots and many individual moments are incredible. Bakshi really pushes the boundaries of that PG rating, even for 1976. If you cut out the dim comic relief and got a better narrator (I love Susan Tyrell but she sounds completely wasted here) it’d be a minor classic.

My children, the one true technology is nature. All the other form of man made technology are perversions.

Classic tale of good versus evil through the eyes of Bakshi. This is among my favorites of his films and is likely less offensive than the uninitiated would find his other works. I imagine most of the people who didn'#39;t like this would be absolutely horrified by most of his other films. Folks seem to be down with Bakshi or they'#39;re not; I'#39;m definitely one of the former.

Level '#34;Marvellous'#34; • 9  • Very Recommended.
