Crotchety retired doctor Isak Borg travels from Stockholm to Lund, Sweden, with his pregnant and unhappy daughter-in-law, Marianne, in order to receive an honorary degree from his alma mater. Along the way, they encounter a series of hitchhikers, each of whom causes the elderly doctor to muse upon the pleasures and failures of his own life. These include the vivacious young Sara, a dead ringer for the doctor's own first love.

The way it’s told is interesting and makes this kind of worth it. With the dreams and the flashbacks. That’s all okay. Almost reminds me of Christmas Carol in a way. Most of the other characters are annoying as fuck, though. It distracted the hell out of me and made me thankful that this was not that long.

I love Victor Sjostrom's performance in The Phantom Carriage, so it was fun and emotionally resonant to watch this movie with him in the lead, as we see his character confront the guilt and regrets that come with old age. There was depth here that I don't think I was fully present to (a common experience when I watch Bergman, that feeling of subtext washing over me) so it's one I want to revisit.

The most uneventful road trip of the history cinema, along with an old man's bittersweet memories and life reflections. Like Proust's infamous madeleine, Isak Borg's strawberries trigger a series of idyllic flashbacks and disturbing nightmares that make him realize how little he knows about the world, how he was after all the leading cause of his own pain and loneliness. It's an incredibly poetic and melancholic film, but I have to confess that I expected it to get much deeper into the characters' psyche.

Bergman talks about the meaning of life and the pass of time.

Great cast, that will repeat in several of Bergman's movies and remarkable performances from Ingrid Thulin and Victor Sjöström.
