One of my favorite Christmas movies, and I think it's because this is not anywhere close to a typical Christmas movie.
What is _White Reindeer_? This is an indie drama, and the best kind. The movie is about grief and lose, but there is humor sprinkled in, albeit in standard indie-drama fashion where it's the situation that makes a moment funny, not what's being said. Does our lead, Suzanne, have a tearful heart to heart with a woman who is wearing a strap-on dildo? Why, yes, she does!
The movie is not flawless, to echo a comment from another reviewer, the story is muddled. However, I think that's a feature, not a bug.
See, this is a slice of life. Life isn't always focused, especially when you are trying to process a loss. That being said, I will admit that I still can't tell, after seeing this many times, what the meaning is, if anything.
All I can tell you is, the film fits a very specific mood, and it's the mood I am in, typically. Look, the movie is depressing. You might laugh here and there, but overall this is not a fun ride.
The movie gets a strong recommendation from me. Although, is comes with a huge disclaimer: If you are not a fan of darkly comedic, sad indie dramas, stay far away. The movie is not for everyone, and it doesn't need to be.
