Sometimes being kind isn't doing the right thing.. It was okay, watchable, and some great acting from Imelda..

So much more than a simple “message” film (see The Cider House Rules)–I found myself quite moved by this one, thanks to a) Mike Leigh’s improvisational style, which contributed to a lived-in sense of realism; and b) the gut punch of a performance by Imelda Staunton. It was really two performances, as the movie takes a turn halfway through that completely shifts her performance into something else. I couldn’t tear my eyes away the whole time, and loved this so much more than I thought I might.

Imelda Staunton is great here as the middle-aged wife, merrily living her family life with husband "Stan" (Phil Davis) and her two grown up children and their partners. She is well respected by her peers and seems to be the epitome of the hardworking 1950s British housewife. Until, that is - a polic More
