It's not good, but it's a total guy movie. Watch it for the mindless fun.
Dolph and Stallone then Dolph and Brandon Lee, and then Dolph and Van Damme..loved all 3
One of good Van Damme movies, old time classic already, even if it's not as perfect as we would like it to be. Some moments are still fun enough though, such as "diner scene" or pulling out the beacon out of his leg.
With a futuristic apology, pure action cinema.
This would have been a better film if they leaned into the cheese and silliness. The directing and scene design are weak and sparse. Van Damme acted as if this was his first time in front of the camera. Ally Walkers character was a highlight for me. The cinematography in certain scenes were fantastic. A film that could easily be rebooted or inspire some updates. I now also understand why this film showed up in bargain bins all the time at walmart growing up.
Certainly not the best movie in the world, but still quite cool (literally) and it is with Van Damme and Lundgren, Two under average actors that still have a certain attraction that is difficult to explain. A classic in its own right (that deserves a better remake with better actors).
I grew up watching this on TV. I hadn't seen it in more than 2 decades. It's so stupid. It's a good thing it doesn't take itself too seriously.
STILL A FUN MOVIE BUT AFTER ALL THIS TIME IT'S NOT AGED WELL, DUMB FUN IF YOU WILL. WHERE TERMINATOR 2 IS TIMELESS AND THE FAR FAR SUPERIOR MOVIE LIKE DON'T MENTION THESE 2 IN THE SAME SENTENCE. BUT THAT BEING SAID VAN AND DOLF WORK SO WELL TOGETHER AND THE MOVIE IS STILL ENTERTAINING AFTER OVER TWO DECADES PAST. AND IT IS A CLASSIC UN TO IT'S SELF. 6/10
"You're discharged... Sarge. Can't believe that yesterday it was 30 years ago that Universal Soldier was released. Time flies! Anyway Universal Soldier is still entertaining as can be. You have the fun van Damme restaurant scene and the movie stealing supermarket scene with big Dolph Lundgren. The action is solid and the explosions are big. Van Damme has to show off his butt again and you have some great one-liners. Ally Walker is a Linda Hamilton light and they should've given Michael Jai White more to do. Roland Emmerich could've gotten more out of this but he still did a fine job. Universal Soldier is a great early 90's action movie and a must watch for any action fan. Lovely rewatch!
If you'#39;ve got a fetish about JCVD'#39;s butt you'#39;re gonna be in for treat. The rest us will be rather unpleasantly surprised how bad this movies really is. Damn I didn'#39;t expect much but it turned out even much worse.
'gt;'#34;You'#39;re dead soldier...'#34; Compared to Terminator 2, I would give this a 5. But since I am judging it on it'#39;s own as a JCVD movie and nostalgia, this is getting bumped to a 7. It is a lower budget terminator style movie and JCVD and Dolph Lundgren are great in it. Cheesy? Yeah. Is it also violent, funny and have epic scenes? Yeah! This is a JCVD classic and I am here for it!
I mean, it totally makes no sense, but I suppose it kept me watching for the whole film...

Universal Soldier is a mindless action movie with a very simple premise. It has all the classic 90s action movie tropes including the cheesy dialogue and dumb entertainment. I would be lying if I said I did not chuckle a couple of times at some of the dialogue and scenes, especially the valet parking scene. The film is certainly made to be a pop corn film and it knows that, and some of the action is enjoyable. JCVD was ok in this role, but I did find him quite boring at times. I get he is a sort of cyborg with no emotions but I did find myself not really caring about him too much and he was a little too wooden. Seeing him take out guys with his kicks never gets old however. I thought Ally Walker was quite good however, she was charming and quite likeable. Dolph was probably the best part of the film for me, despite also being a cyborg, as the film progressed he started becoming more like his old self from the opening scene, the psychotic soldier was coming back, and seeing him snap was fun. Dolph is a huge guy and very intimidating, he was quite a bad ass looking villain, but I wish he had more depth. For a popcorn movie though, I accept it for what it is. A lot of people compare this to RoboCop or Terminator, and while it does have its similar traits, it is not on the level of those films, but I don't think it ever tried to be. I think what RoboCop did better than this was first introduce us to the main character before he was turned into a cyborg. We got to see Murphy being a human and it helped me understand and care for him that much more. We are just thrown right into the film of Luc trying to save some people and I didn't care much. You do not need your brain for this movie, as its very straightforward. I did think the some of the sound effects and score was a bit too loud, but I get it tried to get people pumped. The ending was pretty cool, I liked the fight scene between Dolph and JCVD, it was quite graphic as well. This is a watchable movie that I recommend everyone to see at least once, but it is not really a memorable one. 5/10

Some similarities with Terminator, still kind of a fun if not also messy sci-fi actioner, with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgin going head-to-head. Oh, and forgot how much of a crush I had on Ally Walker back then. Anyway, not bad but certainly a movie that feels like it was from the 90s. **3.25/5**
