When _The Matrix_ (1999) arrived, so many movies were trying to emulate its style; _Ultraviolet_ is one.
To say the movie is over stylized would be an understatement. It has all the ultra-cool sci-fi action attributes: techno music, big fight scenes, cybergoth aesthetic. Basically an anime at times.
Another big part to talk about here is the amount of CGI, wow. To say the movie is using copious amounts of CGI is putting it mildly. The entire movie looks like it was shot against blue screen. There are other moments that look like a video game. Think _Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow_ (2004) and you'll have a good idea.
A minor problem within was the rating - PG-13. I wouldn't say it was a big problem, because the action was still able to play out. Trouble is the fights involved guns, and swords, yet there was no blood. None. People are getting shot, and stabbed, hell, a guy gets cut in half in one scene, but there's not a drop of blood - to be fair, he was on fire, so whatev'. I think the movie would have benefitted from an R, merely because the sanitization made the violence weird.
On to the cast. When you have a movie that is going to feel a lot like _Resident Evil_ (2002), you may as well get the queen herself, Milla Jovovich. Is she good? Yeah, in her early-2000s, super-cool, unstoppable-force kind of way.
The only other name worth mentioning is Nick Chinlund, as our villain. He really shines as the gleefully-evil bad guy.
As for the story: there's not much going on here. Violet (Jovovich) is here to rescue a boy from the bad guy. Lots of flashy fights. The end. Also, this is technically a vampire movie, but it literally could be cut out and wouldn't matter at all.
As a side note, while watching this, it occurred to me that Milla would have made a perfect Baroness - from G.I. Joe. How this never happened should be considered a crime against humanity. Furthermore, _The Rise of Cobra_ (2009) released only three years after this. Not to say Sienna Miller wasn't good, she was great, but Milla is Baroness. I much prefer to watch _Ultraviolet_ as a crazy, spinoff Baroness movie.
So, overall, the movie is good, could have been better. Milla looks fantastic in her skin-tight outfits. If you are a fan of 2000s' cool, check it out. I recommend this to fans of _Aeon Flux_ (2005) or any of the other movies previously mentioned.
