Having no experience with the game, I approached this thinking it would be a textbook cash-grab game tie-in, but I was pleasantly surprised to be proven otherwise. It's obvious that the production is approached with some dedication. It's not quite at the quality you'd expect from your typical movie production, but it's far more detailed than I would have ever expected. The complete lack of 3DCGI in performance scenes is rarely scene in the idol-subgenre these days, and the 2d performances were handled much better than anything I can remember in recent years. The performances, music-wise, were decent - nothing spectacular or memorable, but catchy enough to be enjoyable. I have no idea if they're new works, or ones ripped straight from the game so I can't really comment there further.

The setting itself is also a little different, using a future-setting to forgo the typical 'underdogs vying for attention from a larger, rival idol group' in place of making it more of a societal issue, with idol culture having subverted and fallen to the wayside. While this initially felt quite refreshing, it soon became apparent that this idea would be completely underutilised, leaving the story as a hollow-shell consisting of nothing but the most generic singular, corporate antagonist I've ever seen and a pure endearment-fest that never attempts to make any commentary on the current state of idol culture, nor explaining how it dwindled in the current setting. While I understand it's probably geared to a more casual audience, there's just literally no explanation besides 'it isn't cool anymore' and that means that there's absolutely no nuance to the themes, creating an overly shallow 'must have a concert x big before y date to stop xyz from purchasing the facility we need' story arc that leaves the protagonists succeeding by default in a world where they're considered old-fashion and un-cool. It's still a heat-warming result, thanks to well-handled character interactions & growth, but one that hardly feels real or even earned.

The story is an incredibly generic snooze fest, but as a standalone product I'd say it's still worth checking out if you're into the idol scene, as the 2d performances unfortunately warrant a watch all on their own in this day and age.
