A weird pandemic where people have mushroom/coral things growing on their bodies. A woman working on a cure is assaulted and wakes up in what seems to be a cryogenic module.

There are two very different parts.

The first part entirely takes place in this cryogenic module, a little like Buried where everything is in a coffin, everything is inside this small tin can. She unplugs herself and try to communicate as it seems other people are in the same situation nearby. After a while you're starting to wonder if she's gonna stay there for long, and if she won't regret unplugging the tubes that would feed her, or ever worse, the ones for evacuating. It's not really clear how much time has passed before she woke up either.

Some robot looking guys (think Dr Who's Cybermen) seem to get the people out of the pods and either take them away, or kill them if they look too infected by the virus. Clearly, the goal is to escape before they get to you.

So this first part is not for the claustrophobic obviously. Not much action, mainly close ups on her, and just a small view of outside when she manages to open a vent. It's oppressing as you would expect, and it raises lots of questions. How did she get there ? And the others ? Where are they ? When are they ? Who are the robots ? What do they want ? It's pretty good despite the very limited vision offered to us.

The second part, that's where it gets weird.
She opens her pod and escapes, and so
we finally can really see outside of the pods. This is all metallic, dark and grey, looks very futuristic, almost like a space station. A huge contrast to the pod interior that was white with some coloured lights.
After fighting, presumably killing, one of the cybermen, she finds out one of them is, or used to be, her assistant
. Starting from there she
is one of them, in a golden armor and apparently having lost the ability to speak
.

So this whole part is almost without any dialogue. But to make it easier to swallow, it's interlaced with flashbacks from her life, mainly linked to her relation with her husband
who cheated on her, so she contaminated him on purpose
.

As often this kind of movie, you're wondering if you're missing something because you fell asleep and miss it or if it was never shown. At first you think she just
took over a robot costume and will go to help the other left in pods so that they can also escape
, but you barely see any of the other during this part. And seeing the heavy process a bit later
you can understand she just not took it over
.

It's very hard to understand what happens as nobody is really speaking but I gather that she
went through the transformation process after recognizing her assistant
. So first this implies we are actually far in the future, as this process and the drastic changes it implies were probably not developed overnight, nor the decision to actually use it. Does it also means that it was absolutely necessary, and that
all that is left of humanity is in that form
or is it just here, in this facility reviving pod people ?

Also implies the robots' job is to revive these people and put them through this process, as evidenced by the encounter with
one of those that was taken away earlier, now in robot form
. However, she
fights and kill him
, presumably because she wants to
save her ex husband and get him through the process, even if his contamination level means he should be disposed of, which the other guy was going to do
.

This second party is hard to decipher, not only by the visual style, dark and a little blurry, but mostly by the total absence of dialogue or even face expression. I'm still not sure whether this is a sign of a good or bad movie.
Not sure about my interpretation of what the robots are and their job. Not sure it was acceptable to kill some. Not sure whether she really intended
to help John or punish him
. Not sure whether worked either way. And no idea what the last shots showing the still in pod Wayne with flashbacks of children meant.

Anyway, at least let's say it makes you turn it upside down to try to understand, which is a good thing I guess. The two parts give very different experiences and visual styles. First one is good, it is what the movie initially sells. Second part is probably too weird and mindfucking for most people. The flashbacks have sadly little interest, apart from transforming her into
a not so innocent victim as we thought
.
