Overview

Arthur and his two children inherit his uncle's estate: a glass house that serves as a prison to twelve ghosts. When the family, accompanied by a nanny and an attorney, enter the house they find themselves trapped inside an evil machine 'designed by the Devil and powered by the dead' to open the Eye of Hell. Aided by a ghost hunter and his rival, a ghost rights activist out to set the ghosts free, the group must do what they can to get out of the house alive.

I enjoyed this; incredible set, ghosts looked cool. Concept of the glasses was intriguing. Story was so-so, but kept me entertained.

Silly plot in a great looking set.

I enjoyed it, better than some so called horror movies being made today.

It is cheesy but entertaining.

This probably is not meant as a comedy... but it's hilarious..

2000's horror gets a lot of flack in fandom circles, but it's still one of the most distinctively styled eras of the genre and Thirteen Ghosts is one of the first benchmark entries into the catalogue. Above all else, truly exceptional set design with a decent narrative to tie everything together. It's short, sweet, with enough of a twist to keep you hooked, even when the titular ghosts get a little repetitive in their antics. To echo my friends description, this movie is a total Film4 movie. One that you find one night at 11pm on Film4 and accidentally end up watching the whole thing. Not the greatest in quality, but solid stuff. I hope people start giving the 2000's the respect they deserve, now we're 20 years out and all

just silly enough to be entertaining. also, more proof for why you should never trust an inheritance from an uncle. also also: this movie poster terrified me as a kid and in a way this is just. incredibly disappointing by comparison.

Choppy editing, frequent flash frames, and uninteresting plot, render this movie practically unwatchable.

A rather gruesome horror film, Thir13en Ghosts delivers violence and gore aplenty. After his uncle’s death Arthur Kriticos inherits a luxurious and elaborate house, but he soon learns that it’s actually a machine that’s powered by the dead and was designed by the Devil for the purpose of opening the Eye of Hell. Starring Tony Shalhoub, Shannon Elizabeth, Matthew Lillard, and F. Murray Abraham, the cast isn’t half bad, but their performances are terrible. And, the ghost designs are pretty gratuitous. Additionally, the tone of the film is all over the place, from family drama, to wacky comedy, to supernatural horror. While Thir13en Ghosts does some interesting things, the execution is poor, resulting in a confusing mess that doesn’t work.

So much of the early naughts were driven by the desire to see Shannon Elizabeth on screen, but for Thir13en Ghosts, you'll end up staying for Matthew Lillard. His performance aside, there's not much to this movie at all.

Catching up before it's leaving Shudder. I'm a fan of William Castle version but I've been avoiding this because that poster looks so goddamn awful. I thought it would be at least fun to watch but I was wrong. It's hard to get through. This has some of the worst editing I’ve seen. I know flashing lights and quick cuts are like the editing style of late 90's and early 2000's but in this one it gives me headache. The ghost designs are decent with great makeup/costumes and the set design is actually pretty cool with all the maze and latin stuff but it doesn't even look like a 'house' unless you're dumb. Every aspect of this film is bad except the production design. It's boring, confusing, and not scary at all. The acting is terrible. They have a hard time remembering their character motivations so screaming and shouting is all they can do. Should've been dead since every single one of them are insufferable.

I think it's about time they should make a another remake of this. wouldn't you agree?

Pretty sweet movie. I'm glad they remade this movie. They have a lot of crazy spirits locked in there. I liked it!

This is a movie I could've sworn I had seen before, but remember little about it, which does say something. Still, some interesting elements, the ghosts' designs, when you can appreciate them, have an almost Hellraiser-like quality to them, and never a bad thing having Tony Shalhoub in the lead even when I didn't once buy into the family dynamic. Has the hallmarks of a a film from that era, with the direction (and camera angles) plus the inclusions of Shannon Elizabeth (American Pie franchise) and Matthew Lillard (Scream franchise) in there. Also, the twist at the end didn't make a lick of sense. That said, can't say I was ever bored and honestly, if anyone actually remembered this movie, the setting would make for a fun scare house (and using special glasses to see the entities) somewhere like at the Universal Horror Nights or w/e it's called. **2.75/5**
