Theater Camp

Turns out mockumentary is not as easy as Christopher Guest makes it look! Perhaps also let down by a lack of affection for it's characters, we seem to be invited to laugh at not with them.

I had zero expectations going into Theater Camp- this movie would legit just intended to round out my watchalong for the day, I didn't know a THING about it. But man...It surprised me. This is the exact movie that hits me where I live as an aspiring film maker; such an authentic, sincere story that made me smile ear to ear. The characters made me live (especially Troy which I DID NOT expect going in), I was so engaged with their personalities and goals. The cinematography takes full advantage of the mockumentary film style. And damn, its funny! With that said, I fully admit this is hardly special from a writing front, as basically all the best scenes feel largely improvised, and I think this cemented for me that Ben Platt isn't a good screen actor, because despite being the lead he easily has the worst performance here. Still, I had a good time in spite of that, and I would watch "Joan, Still" on broadway opening night.
