Look. This movie had a lot of potential. I liked the 90s setting. If you want a modern gothic drama or the gothic mood, like I did, you'll like this movie *enough*. If you're looking to be scared and terrified, look elsewhere. Like some reviews have said elsewhere, I was enjoying it up until the last 15 minutes and then I was confused and all "WTF?!?". I can see how the ending ruined the movie for most. I will say that I had just finished the novella by Henry James, so I was able to watch the movie with more backstory and details that many watching this movie would not have. It touched on a few theories about the novella, but the part with [spoiler] the tutor's mother and the ending was completely out of left field for me (not in the novella at all, not that it matters to me, but that's why it was out of nowhere for me). I would assume the movie was on the side of the tutor actually being crazy, but when you're watching the movie, the ending will be totally confusing because the movie did a terrible job building and leading up to it.
