So much to really admire about it yet a 6. The plot and characters are good, no question. It was gripping but something was missing in terms of thrills (I'm aware its not that type of movie but it would have helped). The problem for me was that the mystery felt too vague. I wasn't sure what was going on for a long time because the plot doesn't have a definitive point as to when you should start taking one plot point seriously. I wasn't sure what exactly was going on and I didn't want to know 100%, that's the point of a mystery, but 30 minutes from the end I still felt empty yet intrigued. There wasn't really a massive clue by clue build up of who the mysterious character was, although I did like the subtleness of the reveal. It just wasn't the execution I fully enjoy on it's one. I wouldn't say it's scary but some moments of creepiness happen. Some of the camerawork was incredible.

I remember seeing this when it first came out (1978) and thinking it a bit overblown. Just watched it again (2020) after it was featured in a list of films containing an English cricket match (a short list; The Go Between from the same period is another one, also with Alan Bates in a similar role)
