Overview

Tired of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, itinerant journalist Paul Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local San Juan newspaper run by the downtrodden editor Lotterman. Adopting the rum-soaked lifestyle of the late ‘50s version of Hemingway’s 'The Lost Generation', Paul soon becomes entangled with a very attractive American woman and her fiancée, a businessman involved in shady property development deals.  It is within this world that Kemp ultimately discovers his true voice as a writer and integrity as a man.

I'#39;ve had hoped for more.

Average to boring. Good acting.

Good for Mr. Depp but... what happened with the '#34;bad guys'#34;???

Average. Had higher expectations.

I was hoping for some wacky adventures like in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but this was.... different. To be honest i was kind of bored with most of the story. Sure, there were parts that were fun to watch, but the overall story is no competition to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

'#34;Your tongue is like an accusatory giblet!'#34; xD

Totally awesome. Perfect combination of comedy, drama and a bit of adventure.

Always been a fan of Hunter S. Thompson, and I really like this book, but I am forgetting it before I watch this, as this surface level compared to the book. So putting the book aside, I love this as a prequel to the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas movie, as it similarly focuses on the ride versus the journey. This was a fun, intoxication fueled, somewhat thought-provoking tale, that doesn't ignore the destruction America did to Puerto Rico as we "made it better?"... One quote stands out to me, it took place around the JFK/Nixon election, as Depp is talking about Nixon and living a life of lies, he says 'gt;the only eventuality worse than him, is that you know one day some filthy whore beast is going to show up and make him look like a liberal then shortly follows it up with Nixon can't win, the "Irish one" will, and then adds that "but they won't let him live" in reference to JFK... But it is so fucking sad how true it is, and how much worse it has gotten...

The Rum Diary tells the tale of a failing newspaper in Puerto Rico during the 1950s. Johnny Depp leads the cast, which also includes Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, and Giovanni Ribisi. The story is pretty interesting and has a number of colorful characters that get into a series of fun shenanigans. However, the film drags at times and loses focus. The Rum Diary is an entertaining film with a solid cast, but it’s a bit directionless.

Uma história verídica tão interessante, e um filme tão pastelão...

'gt;"Your tongue is like an accusatory giblet!" So this is the movie that brought Depp and Heard together huh? Bet he regrets that. While this movie tells an interesting story, at the end I felt like I watched a story somewhat about nothing, that takes place in Puerto Rico and people love to drink. If it had ended on a strong note, it would be a pretty good movie.
