A brilliant but deranged neurosurgeon becomes obsessively fixated on a judge's daughter. With the help of an escaped criminal whose face he has surgically deformed, the mad man lures her, her father, and her fiancé to his isolated castle-like home, where he has created a torture chamber with the intent of torturing them for having 'tortured' him.

Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi reunite once again for a Universal adaptation of an Edgar Allan Poe work with _The Raven_. The story follows a surgeon named Vollin who blackmails a criminal who comes to him for a face change, and uses him to help him purse a young patient that he’s become infatuated with. While the plot bears little resemblance to Poe’s poem, the film does have a strong Poe theme to it with Vollin being a Poe fan who quotes his work and creates torture devices inspired by Poe’s stories. And this in turn helps to set a dark and foreboding tone. A chilling horror film, _The Raven_ is a bona fide classic.

When Judge Tatcher's daughter is severely injured in an automobile wreck, he begs a talented but retired surgeon, Dr. Richard Vollin to save his daughter's life. After she's recovered, he realizes Vollin's infatuation with her and she already has a fiancé so he tells him to stay away from her. Unfortunately Vollin doesn't take it very well. So he come up with a diabolical torturing plan to seek revenge using Edmond Bateman, a murderer whose face he's cruelly altered. Enjoyably ridiculous horror with Lugosi and Karloff in it with Lugosi as a maniacal villain. You can tell he's having a really great time. It's extremely short, never loses steam, has gorgeous production design, and builds to a fabulous climax. It gets quite dark but still delivers some goofy moments. A great watch for the spooky season. I wish more modern horror movies were quick and to the point like this.

Lugosi and Karloff at their best. Tells a story about a mad doctor who has an infatuation for Edgar Allan Poe and his torture devices. He saves an injured woman and becomes infatuated with her. With the help of Karloff as a disfigured murder, they try to eliminate whoever stands in the way of the doctor and his infatuation. Great movie....

The Raven succeeded in 1935 where Roger Corman and Vincent Price failed 28 years later.
