Probably Roland Emmerich's best film. Since it's so good, you forget he's the director. It definitely helps that you Mel Gibson seeking vengeance against a British Colonel that killed one of his sons. Since Mel is so good in revenge films. The late Heath Ledger is also solid as his older son who blames himself for the death of his brother. Jason Isaacs steals the show though as the ruthless British Colonel. Despite the revenge plot, I should mention the Patriot is of course a war film. Except Jason Isaacs is so good as a bastard that you just care about him getting what he deserves. More so than who wins the whole battle.

A solid war movie. The cannon ball effects are brutal and Jason Isaacs is great.

A decent movie, I liked seeing Heath Ledger and Jason Isaacs. Good soundtrack by John Williams. The story was somewhat interesting but I lost interest over its 3 hour course. I also didn't really care much for the characters.

As with both Mel Gibson ahistorical war epics,the *best* parts are Gibson's performance, the English villain being so over-the-top villainous that you can't help but love to hate them, and the satisfying conclusions. This movie is complete historical fiction, just like Braveheart, but also like Braveheart, it's well-made and very re-watchable if you can move past the bad history and pandering to the country's audience the movie was set in. Also, what an amazing few years Chris Cooper had! Pops up and blows everyone's minds in October Sky *and* American Beauty in 1999, does The Patriot, and finally wins his well-deserved Oscar for Adaptation. All in three years!

Here's Mel to give the Brits an inaccurate historical thrashing, again...

The Patriot is based around one Benjamin Martin, an ex-soldier, who now happily living as a family man finds himself thrust into conflict at the break of the American Revolution.
