From a riddle-speaking butterfly, a unicorn learns that she is supposedly the last of her kind, all the others having been herded away by the Red Bull. The unicorn sets out to discover the truth behind the butterfly's words. She is eventually joined on her quest by Schmendrick, a second-rate magician, and Molly Grue, a now middle-aged woman who dreamed all her life of seeing a unicorn. Their journey leads them far from home, all the way to the castle of King Haggard.

I never read the source material but I can tell—in the same vein as the animated LotR adaptation from the same era—this doesn't do it justice. The storyline works, but it should have been pitched to more adept hands, such as Disney or Don Bluth at the time. The budget and technical means are obviously there, but there's a sense the filmmakers have no idea what they're doing. The screenplay and voice work are halfhearted and awkward, the songs are possibly the worst I've ever heard in this category of film, appearing to serve no other purpose than to stretch the runtime instead of using it for much needed character development.

The overall story is good, nonetheless the animation is a bit quirky, not up to the standards set by Disney or Pixar. Still a good movie for kids.

Peter S. Beagle’s beloved fantasy classic, _The Last Unicorn_, is brought to life in this Rankin/Bass animated film. When a unicorn learns that she could be the last of her kind, and that the others have been driven into the sea, she sets out on a quest to save them. Starring the voice talents of Mia Farrow, Jeff Bridges, Angela Lansbury, and Christopher Lee, the film has a strong cast. However, the animation is weak; lacking depth and texture. And, the soundtrack by America doesn’t really work (though the title song’s pretty good). Yet while it has its flaws, _The Last Unicorn_ is an enchantment film that captures the spirit of Beagle’s original tale.

The song gives me chills. The adaptation is missing out on a lot of things from the book but is still worth a watch for its outstanding atmosphere.

[6.4/10] Not everything that works on the page works on the screen. Adaptation is an art all its own, and translating a story or a mood or a character from one medium to another is its own kind of magic. *The Last Unicorn* film has the advantage of Peter S. Beagle, author of the source novel, writin More
