One of Martin Scorsese's most entertaining films that somehow slipped through the cracks The King of Comedy could not find its audience during its original release but I think it tells a story that really works today. Robert De Niro gives one of his most underrated performances as Rupert Pupkin and he shows how desperate one person can be become to achieve fame and fortune.

I have mixed feelings about this movie

I love Scorcese's filmography and the performance of actor Robert De Niro and Jerry Lewis is impeccable. However, I felt that this film takes a long time to happen. In fact, I believe it only happens halfway to the end of the film that it actually becomes a thriller with drama and comedy (side by side).

Tremendous. One of the most underrated movies of all time. It’s like the wine, with the time going, the better it becomes. Great! 9/10

A bit long-winded, but undoubtedly a very good movie.

'The King of Comedy' has a sturdy Robert De Niro lead performance, as well as solid support from Jerry Lewis and Sandra Bernhard. I enjoyed seeing the split from what actually happens and how De Niro's Rupert Pupkin views things via his dreams; especially with how merged they become by the end.

Absolutely zero surprise to now learn that Todd Phillips and Scott Silver used this and 'Taxi Driver' as inspiration when writing 'Joker'. Quite cool though!

I was guided to this movie after a few comments I made when discussing Joker. I was told this is a better telling of the same story. And I've got to say, I agree completely. The main characters are more relatable, understandable. You get a better feel for them. And like Joker although they're not really likable, you can at least get some sort of empathy with them, an understanding.

While not the greatest of movies, it's certainly a better telling of the same story than Joker. Only without the DC Comics aspects included.

This is a great film that has many undertones to the movie Joker. Robert Deniro is a fan obsessed with talk show host Jerry Langford played by Jerry Lewis. It is more of a character study into Rupert Pupkin played by Deniro, an aspiring comedian trying to make it in the big time. Mishaps occur.... great movie. Totally underrated!

I rewatched this after probably 15 years as a direct reaction to seeing 'Joker' recently.

I won't reiterate my thoughts on Joker but let's just say I was 'underwhelmed'.

On seeing this film again, I am relieved to see that this still stands up as a brilliantly acted, very original and (in hindsight) prescient film. It suffers in the same way that movies from this era generally do - they feel a little pedestrian at times as we're used to a quicker pace in these modern times.

Bobby D is fantastic. Wholly committed. Sandra Bernhard steals her scenes as the ultimate stalker whack job. Jerry Lewis is brilliant playing 'Johnny Carson' :D

It's long been said that this is the most slept on Scorcese movie and that is very true. It's so full of praiseworthy elements that it should be seen by all.

It's not a perfect film and it is showing some signs of age. But I still enjoyed it a lot even when I'd seen it before and remembered the twists.

7.5 / 10

(Joker owes a lot to this film. As does Nightcrawler with Jake Gyllenhall. Neither are as good as this though.)

This film stars De Niro as a wannabe comic/star that stalks a pseudo Johnny Carson (Jerry Lewis) in his attempt to be famous. The movie was a fascinating character study of a pathetic and delusional man that has little or no ability to grasp reality. He manages to hook up with an equally kookie Sandra Bernhard and they combine forces to... well, I won't say. The movie is brilliantly acted.

The jumping chronology is a bit jarring; I didn't need to know how things turn out at the beginning, it robs it of tension and dread. It's an interesting look into the rise of a delusional ladder climber, who wants to get to the top, by any means.

When comedy can be mightier and way more uncomfortable than serious drama. The fact that it’s technically rough on the edges just adds up to the film’s bizarre aura. Even though we are probably supposed to laugh at the protagonist, it’s hard not to feel empathy and embarrassment for him, as it won't take much to understand where his delusions are coming from. The ending didn’t take the direction I had expected, but it’s probably the best way to make an even more absurd commentary on how stardom works. A message very close to the one of “Taxi Driver”, but told in a subtler and possibly more grotesque manner.
