Tiny bit predictable at some point but still pure pleasure to watch.

A long movie with lots of great illusions and good acting but the storyline wasn'#39;t convincing or enthralling.

Just an illusion! What an illusion! Where'#39;s my time? My fuckin'#39; time! Give me back my time! This is a shit, not a film. Honestly, and - even if it doesn'#39;t seem - kindly, N.

This movie is pretty much The Prestige without everything that made the Prestige a masterpiece.

Great movie, but it reminded me of The Prestige too much, which i liked better.

_The Illusionist_ is a movie that will leave you mesmerized with its unique and intriguing plot. The film weaves a spellbinding tale that will keep you interested, as you try to piece together the clues and unravel the mystery. The acting in the film is also top-notch, with strong performances that bring the characters to life and add to the overall enjoyment of the movie. It's a good watch if you're looking for a film that will transport you into a world of magic and mystery.

story and acting isn't great. The plot is also too predictable for this type of movie as you realize everything way before it is revealed.

A good magician can keep you guessing about where the trick is going to go. A really good magician can tell you at the start where the trick is going to go and still surprise and delight you when that's where it goes. Perhaps the best magicians are the ones who are just so good that even when you know exactly what they're doing you still can't catch them doing it. This, unfortunately, is the kind of trick where you see at the start exactly where it's going to go, and spend the rest of the performance noticing every single time a card gets palmed or slipped up a sleeve, ready to be produced later.

Years later, I find that Norton was barely making a background with one expression, and Giamatti and Sewell showed real acting here.

Stumbled across this on our S**t Film Saturday (we just put a random film on) It did become watchable and kept our attention. Some very good acting throughout. Good plot twists but became predicable towards the end.

Level '#34;Excellent'#34; • 8  • Recommended.

It has a little mystery from the beginning until the end but the problem is its level is not going high or down never. It causes your excitement is going away. And I think the end has not enough explanation, so it is going to my average movie rank.

Un Norton impeccable pour un film correct qui sait nous entraîner dans son univers malgré quelques défauts et scènes trop prévisibles.

Spoilers

As much as I hate to admit it, they got me. Didn'#39;t see it coming. Will leave it at that so this doesn'#39;t become a plot spoiler. I thought the acting was fair and kind of sporadic. Ed Norton at times seemed a little too stiff. I know he was trying to portray a stoic magician but the only other turn of the century illusionist I know is Harry Houdini and I'#39;ve seen footage of him performing, and he was nothing like that for all those who say Ed was acting appropriate for the time period. However, he is believable which is all you can ask. Paul Giamatti steals the show. His performance was solid, and you can feel the trichotomy in him between his allegiance to the prince and his duty as chief inspector and the burning curiosity to know how the tricks are performed. This movie is very entertaining and I do recommend it.

Boring, neat ending well wrapped up ending.

Great flm. When you spend so much time watching some absolute tosh with the latest movies going back a few years to watch the ones you missed is truly worthwhile.

Seen this movie several times over the years and still find it so entertaining and satisfying thanks in large part to Edward Norton's performance. In some ways, although not as expertly directed, I prefer this over The Prestige, which is a great movie in its own right.

Life and death. Space and time. Fate and chance. Theses are the forces of the universe. The Illusionist is directed by Neil Burger and Burger adapts the screenplay from "Eisenheim the Illusionist" written by Steven Millhauser. It stars Edward Norton, Paul Giamatti, Jessica Biel and Rufus Sewell. Music is by Philip Glass and cinematography by Dick Pope. How splendid, a period romantic mystery that's filled with the mysticism of magical conjurings and political volatility. Plot essentially has Norton as Eisenheim The Illusionist, who later in life runs into Sophie (Biel), his childhood sweetheart, and finds that she's on course to marry Crown Prince Leopold (Sewell). Leopold has a bad reputation and it's not long before Eisenheim comes under Leopold's disdain, forcing Eisenheim to try and pull off the ultimate magic act to save Sophie and himself. Creator Neil Burger crafts a picture that has everything going for it. The story is rock solid with intrigue credentials, where appropriately for a story based around magic tricks nothing is ever as it seems. The period flavours are smartly assembled, the Czech Republic locations smartly standing in for turn of the century Vienna, the art production is on point with the era of setting, as is the costuming. Glass drifts a tender melancholic score over the piece, while Pope's cinematography is simply gorgeous, offering up colour lensing that's aura enhancing, the kind you could get lost in for days. The magic tricks are beguiling, as they should be and are in fact required since the narrative tantalisingly suggests Eisenheim may have supernatural powers? The story itself has no historical worth, but is fascinating none the less. It all builds towards its revelations, and much hinges on if the pay off is worth the admission fee? Most assuredly so it is, even if from a personal point of view this writer wouldn't have minded if pic had finished five minutes before the final revelation. Either way, and with smart acting (Giamatti as the police inspector standing out) without histrionics holding things at the top end, this is delicate film making that engages the emotions fully for entertainment rewards. 8/10
