"The Exorcism," directed by Joshua John Miller (the son of Father Karras), is a 2024 horror film that promises more than it delivers. The plot is overly simplistic, stretching 90 minutes with only about 20 minutes of relevant story. The film flashes to a troubled past but fails to delve deeper, leaving viewers wanting more substance and context. The third act feels poorly written, culminating in a disappointing ending that lacks the intended scare factor.

Anthony Miller, portrayed by Russell Crowe, is a flawed actor in decline, which makes for a possibly interesting lead character. His daughter, played by Ryan Simpkins, is a bold and vulnerable character who adds some depth. However, Blake, played by Chloe Bailey, is underdeveloped, particularly considering her significant role in the third act. Father Conor, portrayed by David Hyde Pierce, is a decent character, bringing some gravitas to the film. Unfortunately, other characters are largely invisible, with the jerk director being a notable exception.

The acting is a mixed bag. Russell Crowe and Ryan Simpkins deliver solid performances, while Sam Worthington does little to stand out. Chloe Bailey is decent, especially in her "demon" scenes, and David Hyde Pierce is an excellent casting choice, adding much-needed gravitas.

The dialogue is limited, with meaningful conversations mainly involving Father Conor. Dialogue from the director character is particularly hard to listen to due to its malicious nature. The pacing is a slow burn with little payoff, making the film drag at times.

Production values are unremarkable, and the film lacks a clear theme or message. It fails to convey why it was made, aside from capitalizing on the "Exorcist" name. The emotional impact is minimal, and while the film is not unwatchable, it is unlikely to warrant a second viewing.

Overall, "The Exorcism" falls short in delivering a compelling horror experience, leaving much to be desired.
