"When a couple decides to adopt a stray cat their perspective on life changes radically." I was amped to watch that movie, unfortunately, that is not what _The Future_ is.
I thought this was going to be about a couple saving a cat, and it making them better people or something to that effect. Nope. The movie is so radically divergent from that.
I'm really at a loss here, I mean I don't think I've watched another movie that was such a bummer, a letdown, and that ultimately made me angry by the end.
I'll take a second to talk about what this actually is: It's a slow indie drama about a couple having a midlife crisis, weirdness, the end.
Where the movie completely goes wrong for me is with the cat, Paw Paw. I can actually feel anger inside of me thinking about how the movie begins with narration from our cat, and keeps cutting back to his perspective, only to never go anywhere with the idea.
Just why?
Also, I am going to include spoilers. I don't care. There's nothing to ruin here.
Second, we have Sophie, and Jason. They play much more as brother and sister instead of a couple. It doesn't help that they look identical. Just look at the picture of them at the header! Look! Could they not have altered their appearance just a little? Glasses, different hair, anything?!
Next, seemingly for no reason, Sophie randomly calls Marshall, a single father, who she has never met, and after a very short time she leaves Jason for him. How do I describe Marshall? Well, he's a total sleaze ball. I just don't understand what the movie is trying to say. What is the character's motivation?
Let's move onto the quirky moments that would be great in a better movie, however are totally lost here: Why does Gabriella dig a hole, so she can sleep in it? What was with the yellow shirt? What was the point of Sophie's awkward dancing?
This is not the first weird indie drama I have watched - I am typically a fan of them - but this one just fails at every step. If you want to see a movie that does a better job with time warping, watch _A Ghost Story_ (2017).
I'm still pissed about the cat.
