It is mid-december, and SOS Brigade chief Haruhi Suzumiya announces that the Brigade is going to hold a Christmas party in their clubroom, with Japanese hotpot for dinner. The brigade members Kyon, Yuki Nagato, Mikuru Asahina and Itsuki Koizumi start preparing everything for the party, such as costumes and decorations. But a couple of days later, Kyon arrives at school only to find that Haruhi is missing. Not only that, but Mikuru claims she has never known Kyon before, Koizumi is also missing, and Yuki has become the sole member of the literature club. The SOS Brigade seems to have never existed, nor has Haruhi Suzumiya. No one in the school has ever heard about her… except for Kyon.

OK, well I foolishly thought this was an independent movie with no show attached to it. SO I was lost through the whole thing. The result of not being familiar with any of the character meant I was completely detached and could really have cared less about them. So basically, don't watch this movie without watching the show.

It was a really good movie, it was filled all the usual timey-wimey shenanigans that you have come to expect of Haruhi Suzumiya. The metaphors and concept behind the movie is truly admirable and I've never wanted to appreciate the "weird" in my life so much. This was a much better feeling to leave off on than the Endless Eight (which I still think was well imagined, just poorly executed). The character development throughout the entire piece is truly central to enjoyment of this movie, you need to understand the tiniest
changes in Kyon's behavior and thinking as he comes to terms with how much he loves his life (and Haruhi) as well as Nagato evolving from a humanoid interface to more something a little more human with emotion
. It's still not the most moving film I've ever watched, and it certainly required an awful lot of backstory from the series to understand, but if you enjoyed the series even the tiniest bit, you'll be happy with your decision to watch this too.

I was about to walk away with mixed feelings from Haruhi after the lackluster and most of the times plain boring second season, but in hindsight I'm really, really glad I didn't. This movie is a masterpiece, simply the most moving and powerful piece of media I've ever experienced. No other has brought me to the verge of tears and to heights of awe that many times, even in rewatches. I urge anyone with even a vague interest on this to just go ahead and do it, it's worth every second of its really long runtime.

Watched this movie twice so far and it's still a very good movie. It's a good change of pacing in terms of the plot, as well as who was the perpetrator behind the movie's event. Also it looked into human psychology for a bit for two characters, which wasn't explored much in the TV anime series.
