The Deer Hunter is an iconic ‘70s film that has not aged well. The story follows a group of friends as they go off to the Vietnam War and how it affects them. Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, and John Savage form a powerful cast, but their performances feel a bit forced. The storytelling is particularly weak and unfocused; spending far too much time establishing characters and far too little time developing them. Yet, The Deer Hunter has its moments and tries (though somewhat inadequately) to say something important about the effects of war.

@jarvis-8243417 consider the following; you're wrong. You're missing the forest for the trees (but the irony of that statement will be lost on you, I'm sure). If you think the story is about the Vietnam War and how it affects a group of friends then you belong in 2009 Wikipedia articles. The story is about love, loss, grief and, above all, guilt. War is just the vehicle with which to navigate and explore all of those rich, deep emotions. Here's something small for you to chew on: why, when they go up into the mountains at the end of the first act, is the guy causing the most drama among the ones not shipping out?
