My rating of The Deadly Spawn may be the result of watching some worse low-budget 80s horror films, but I found this utterly delightful. For a reported $25k budget, the effects are impressive. I was even surprised by the acting and the tight storyline. Nothing seems wasted. It's silly. It's fun. It's awesome. The love of the genre comes through. On a side note, after reading about it on Wikipedia I clicked on an Archive.org link to the official website from 2005. I miss the old internet. Do yourself a favor and check it out. Lousy actors, who have hardly any other roles to show for themselves, and rather mediocre visuals quickly make it clear that “The Deadly Spawn” is an ultra-low-budget monster movie. On the other hand, the practical effects and the monster design are surprisingly strong and even one or two plot twists are somewhat surprising. That's why I would actually describe the movie as worth seeing overall, but you should be prepared for a lot of wooden lines of dialogue.

Like the baby alien in Alien: It doesn't take the easy way out. Almost every low budget horror movie eschews pure horror for horror-comedy because they're afraid their flick looks ridiculous, so they lean into it. The Deadly Spawn decides to go straight horror, and with some pretty decent practical effects (considering the era and the budget) provides solid monster-from-another-planet entertainment. Hell, it was good enough to inspire the first Alien movie, from the look of the baby xenomorph to the scene where it breaks out of the victim's chest. An easy but cheesy recommend.

This is a fun film, it’s no masterpiece but it’s extremely impressive given the $25,000 budget they had to make this film.
