I was very...no very very surprised by how good this movie was. Now let's check the context of that statement by remembering that this is not "The Godfather" or anything. It's a Horror movie and as Horror movies go it's got a lot going for it. Mostly some effective scares and an overwhelming sense of doom and isn't that exactly why you watch a Horror flick?

Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell are a convincing couple even if they are way too good looking for the parts they play. The opening scene is chilling and no time is wasted in developing the terror of a virus that turns people into murdering lunatics. There are a couple of scenes that are hard to watch not because of the gore (which is here in places) as much as the emotional impact of some horrific acts against loved ones. This is a good example of what makes this movie different. It isn't just about the gore but it's about the plight of the characters.

There are a couple of plot twists that really made the story even better and the ending was appropriately dark and hopeless. And speaking of hope I hope that "The Crazies" will be viewed as an influence on future Horror flicks.
