It tries to build an unreal mise-en-scene, of psychological representation, through B/W cinematography in which the color red is the a distorting element. The result is theatrical, and the ambience is artificial. It's interesting that the story is built, not around Enriqueta Martí, but around a manipulative, intriguing gentry, in a Barcelona that welcomed the 20th century among the brothels of the Raval neighborhood.
