I really enjoyed this movie. Dark, sinister and strange. Hero or villain? 🤔

'gt; "Must be extremely satisfying to hear yourself say something so heroic! I'm almost envious. The boy's in pieces under the bed." This starts off so good then just gets lost in odd directing choices. The story is interesting and Ben Kingsley is pretty terrifying but I wish it was a little less fever dream and more focused.

This movie would'#39;ve been a 10. The script was great. Kingsley was fantastic. The rest of the cast was really good. Even most of the editing was pretty decent. But the directing sucked. The lighting and musical choices were terrible. The angles of most of the shots tried too hard to be reminiscent of Hitchcock or Wells. Seemed like a junior director'#39;s first shot. Just completely the wrong director. Paramount needs to try again. Unfortunately won'#39;t work with Kingsley a second time. Shamalyn or Keopp with Bale or Phoenix as Mac and DeNiro, Hackman or Plummer. Problem was probably Cruise as one of the producers. They were likely stuck using Scientologists for everything, which would'#39;ve been fine except for the really sucky directing.

Interesting plot in this little thriller, even if it seems overused and cliché all these years later. But Kingsley gives a great performance, as usual.

Spoilers

Nice 'amp; fresh idea, although the ending is a little too predictable: O'#39;Ryan can see into the heads of serial killers who he kills when catching up with them. O'#39;Ryan leaves clues for Agent Mackelway at the sites of crime until Mackelway can understand O'#39;Ryan'#39;s secret.

Don't remember when I last saw this, but probably was when it was released on DVD. So this is my second viewing and don't remember a whole lot but my rating pretty remained the same. It's unnecessarily confusing but worse, rather dull for the bulk with good actors like Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley not being able to breathe life into boring script. Had potential perhaps under a more experienced director but as it is, this is one I won't revisit for a third time... **2.0/5**
