I would highly recommend this movie. I watched it when it first came out and to this day I remember about it every once in a while, I believe all the negative reviews it received by so called '#34;critics'#34; come from the fact it'#39;s not easy to understand.
It pains me to give this movie such a poor grade because it really is so well done. Zack Snyder has such a firm grasp on his look, he'#39;s carved out his own genre of movie. He'#39;s also proved that a movie cannot survive on looks alone.
I thought this movie was terrible. In the first 15 minutes the main character's Mom dies. It's revealed she's likely been being raped for a while. Her step-dad (rapist) tries to rape her after her Mom dies only to decide to rape her little sister instead. So she actually tries to do something - fight back. Of course she's punished for that because she accidentally kills her sister while trying to gun down her step-father. Then her rapist gets her put in a mental asylum where she is fucking lobotomized. I only kept watching this movie in hopes that there would be some kind of turn around. I was wrong. Not a single positive male character until the last 2~ minutes of the movie. Almost every women is a victim and when they try to fight back they are almost across the board punished for it. I did not like this movie. It bummed me out.
Abismal movie. Had great potential to create a dark history but fails for only delivering stuning visuals with a week plot. 2/10
This movie is really dumb. In the opening moments of the film they set up that the brothel is all an imagined reality, and everything that happens there had no meaning. We then spend the entire movie in this space, except for a few moments when the main character dances and enraptures everyone somehow (I have no idea what this translates to in the asylum). These moments look cool, but again they hold even less meaning to what is happening. So then at the end of the movie they reveal that it was an asylum the entire time and we are meant to be shocked by this, even though the movie told us at the beginning. None of the story is interesting or makes any sense or holds any meaning. The only good parts of the movie are the ridiculously stylistic action scenes, however they are only mildly amusing. This movie was a big disappointment, as I was expecting mind bendy reality dream like story telling but I only got a meaningless drivel with over the top action scenes connecting them.
Plot it'#39;s a bit meh, but love visual style.
When main character 'Babydoll' enters her dream state the images are impressive and the combat is fun to watch. In fact it's often jaw-dropping. When she's in the real world it's not only confusing but boring. This is an amazing looking movie but the story is non-existent. It's nothing but a long but pretty music video.
The visuals are stunning, the soundtrack is awesome, the action scenes are great! The plot is where things get tricky... Not because it sucks, but because this is not a straightforward action movie. It works in metaphors, analogies and assumptions, not everything is what it appears to be. In a sense, this may actually be an action movie which requires some thinking from the viewer. So, by joining brains and brawns together in the same movie, no wonder it tanked, since it failed to cater to a specific wider audience (becoming some sort of a niche movie). Regardless, the top comment around here gives some wonderful insight about the plot. Even if you can'#39;t fully grasp what is going on in this movie, _Sucker Punch_ is still one hell of a ride!
It'#39;s not a movie, it'#39;s a video clip
I'#39;ve watched this movie just now. I noticed the underlying story halfway through the movie, though i love the story it portrays i cant help but rate this a three. it felt like a b-movie visually which distracted me horribly away from the story. if there is a movie i wish there would be a remake for it is defiantly thisone.
Bizarre :) Performances of the girls weren'#39;t that good imo. Except Emily :3 The plot was difficult to get into but eventually the plot doesn'#39;t matter that much. It sends you a message with a lot of punch behind it and that'#39;s why this is a valid movie.
A plot would be nice to accompany all the moving and running around with cool music!... Also some god performances. Plain bad, stick to the trailer.

Best Snyder movie so far. Sadly it is deeply misunderstood. Movie is way more deeper and complex than it looks like on first glance. People don't realize Sweet Pea is the protagonist, Babydoll is a figment of Sweet Pea’s imagination. Babydoll does not exist. Babydoll's story is Sweet Pea’s story. Sweet Pea was sexually abused, killed her sister and is in psychiatric hospital in therapy. Babydoll is Sweet Pea's avatar. Way of dealing with grief, with guilt, and way to manage her current situation and overcome it. Babydoll is also Sweet Pea's guardian angel. Sweet Pea is the only fully rounded character, other girls represent aspects of her psyche. Babydoll represents strength and courage, Amber loyalty, Blondie fear, and Rocket represents guilt. In the third level reality her psyche fights for the things to get her free from her current state. Second guardian angel (the Wise Man) guides her through. To fully recover she needs to get over her guilt (Rocket dies as a symbol), also other girls represent things which she needs to leave behind to fully recover . Babydoll is one of those things. She is the fifth thing (“The fifth is a mystery. It is the reason. It is the goal. It will be a deep sacrifice and a perfect victory.”). Lobotomy of Babydoll represents Sweet Pea’s mind of taking control. Sweet Pea needs to sacrifice Babydoll to be “cured”. Escape at the end is a symbol of that process of being cured. That’s why the driver is the Wise Man, he guides her further. Sucker Punch is Sweet Pea’s journey from “madness” to “sanity”. Movie is philosophical / psychological investigation wrapped in a special effects action-fantasy. As the movie changes realities (mostly in the third reality), Snyder uses more fetishized image of the girls. He uses clichés and cluttered iconography (nazi zombies, sexy schoolgirls). It is a way to detached and disconnected characters from second reality. Second reality, the brothel, is the “main” reality. In which everything happens.

Visually stunning, but poorly written, according to Zack Snyder's vision of the film, Sucker Punch it's an "Alice in Wonderland with machine guns", well, this movie it's so bad that apparently seems as if he was written while he was actually in wonderland. Appears to be a dull and boring videogame with a dumb plot and a terrible cast such as the "browning" Emily "Boring" with her dull girls. Filled with non-stop action and beautiful women but boring as hell, Sucker Punch is totally nonsense, with an weird first act, followed by a "what the hell ?' second act and concluding with an stupid third act. It has some short positive points such as the soundtrack by Tyler Bates, the awesome videogame look-like visual and beautiful girls and that's it, the rest of the movie is absolutely dispensable, which is a bit of a huge deception for a big studio movie like this. Zack Snyder is not a bad director, he fills our eyes with beautiful images and the slow motion scenes he puts into are cool but annoying sometimes, but honestly, Snyder should be forbidden to write his original scripts for movies, i still don't understand 85% of the film, maybe because it sucks so much. 4/10

I for one felt this was a masterpiece; a Zack Snyder original. The visual effects were stunning, the fight choreography was jaw dropping and the casts' performances were superb. Even the storyline itself was well written. This is one of my favourite films.

I was surprised to actually like this film. Baby Doll, Sweet Pea, Rocket, Amber and Blondie are the 5 main characters in the film. As much as I like Baby Doll and her costume, I really liked Sweet Pea. Something in her was so familiar. She's the big sister who will do anything for her younger sister. That's me. I like the action scenes. Baby Doll was so sexy. I liked this movie.

Wow… Here I was, thinking I was going to get to see an awesome comic- like film about a group of girls kickin' a whole lotta butt surrounded by mind-bending fantasy scenery. Technically, I was right… But only technically. Sucker Punch is like Chinese food. You can eat three plates and it will still leave you feeling hungry. It's a great deal of empty calories, is basically what I'm saying. Substance? Nah. Let me just get right into it. What's wrong with Sucker Punch is the screenplay. Not the actors, not the director, just the story. This story revolves around a group of five girls in an institution for the mentally insane, in a fantastical, steampunk-wannabe 1940's (my best guess) setting. They are treated horribly and their lives are miserable, and to cope with it all, the main protagonist Babydoll, escapes into her fantasies and in this trance-like state, devises a plan for them all to escape. The concept is not bad. It might have even been really exciting, had it not been executed so laughably unrealistic. And by 'unrealistic', I don't mean the fantasies themselves. I'm referring to the fact that these fantasies were so obviously not dreamed up by an actual teenage girl, but rather they look like the perfect fulfillment of the wet wishes of a horny teenage boy. It is very likely that a teenage girl WOULD dream of being able to wield a samurai sword and beat up every monster, dragon and every other kind of bastard who crosses her path. She WOULD dream of coming out of every battle completely unscathed and with every hair on her pretty head still perfectly in place. She would NOT, however, be doing all of this scantily clad in sexy lingerie wearing fishnet stockings and high heels… I am a girl, with very vivid imagination. Trust me on this one. It was, in one word, ridiculous. Another thing that really bothered me was the way these characters were worked out. As obviously miserable as their personal predicaments were, I could not relate to a single one of them. They were all completely 2- dimensional and just flat-out uninteresting. I didn't care about what happened to a single one of them. I don't believe all of the blame for this falls on the actresses (although theirs weren't exactly Oscar winning performances...), again, I chalk it up to poor screen writing. The only one who was able to make her character slightly more than moderately interesting, was not even one of 'the girls', it was Dr. Vera Gorski, played by Carla Gugino. At least she was interesting to watch, and she was even somewhat of a scene-stealer, taking much thunder away from the girls simply because she (both the actress and the character) had the biggest personality. All the others, I felt were mostly just going through the motions, because they had zero character development and no interesting dialogue to work with. And that's bad when you're talking about the characters that are supposed to carry the story. A pleasant (and much needed surprise) came in the form of Scott Glenn, who only appears in the fantasy segments as several different versions of a wise man. That was a nice touch. However, the one thing that really stood out for me as the true axis of failure that sums up Sucker Punch, was the feeling of total confusion that was present from the beginning and never cleared up. I'm not saying I didn't 'get it', I'm saying it was a hot, incoherent mess. And I usually don't mind being thrown back and forth and to and fro throughout a film, I don't mind playing guessing games and wondering what it will all lead to. I DO mind when the roller-coaster ride is over and all I feel is queasy. Some people have suggested that this is a really deep and complex film, but honestly, I think they're just reading too much into it. The stupid thing is, for the most part it was completely predictable, and STILL it lacked structure and decent storytelling. That may seem like a paradox, but there's an easy way to explain it. In the words of the great Roger Ebert: "Now that's bad filmmaking." The only element in Sucker Punch that was somewhat redeeming, were the visual effects. I must say, it was all very gorgeous and eye-pleasing. Also, the soundtrack was excellent, filled with very well performed covers of well-known songs and some perfectly chosen originals. Emily Browning, who plays Babydoll (and also sings a few songs on the soundtrack), was a good choice for the lead role, but I must say, in all honesty, that was mostly because she was visually very appealing as the main protagonist. More simply put – she was very pretty. Still, I'm not sure that's enough to carry a film. All in all, I'm left feeling – Zack Snyder… Dude. What were you thinking. You can do so much better than this. I guess I just finally have to come to terms with the fact that everybody's human and is bound to make one big mistake at least once in their lives. Zack… this is yours. Sucker Punch sucks. _(November 2013)_
