So slow that the film never really gains any momentum, content to wallow in the depression of the characters. For a film whose goal is to show the affect that the economic and political decisions have on the individual family unit, it’s ironic that we can only infer the overpowering nature of the main family’s experiences, which is only obliquely shown before whisking us off to another event from a different period. The story is not a mystery so multiple timelines does nothing but make a simple story look convoluted for no real benefit.

A slow rumination on the weight of our sins, and the search for absolution. It's a long movie, but worth every minute.
