When Shrek first came out I was so excited to see it, as a fan of fairy tales I love modern twists. I much prefer the sequel in actual fact, but the original is still highly hilarious and spins everything you know about fairy tales on it's head.

While I don’t think that Shrek necessarily deserved the Oscar for best animated feature (Honestly Monsters Inc should have won because of how much more timeless it is) It’s still not hard at all to see why this movie is still being referenced and quoted to this very day. This movie is a product of its time but it’s a really good product of its time and that’s thanks to its subversive story that defies a lot of expectations, humor that will delight kids and adults with how edgy the material is, great characters that are both funny and sometimes delightful, and animation that may be dated but will nonetheless transport you to a different kind of a fairytale world. This movie is perfect for those looking for a mean-spirited but also fun take on traditional fairytale tropes, especially those who need a break from watching traditional Disney flicks.

I like that movie... that is a nice movie. I have watched Shrek at least once every couple of years since its release and the charm has yet to fade. The fact that it manipulates fairy tales in the manner that it does is kinda genius. The plot of Shrek may seem formulaic and mostly predictable because it is, so were all those fairy tales you knew growing up and that's not a bad thing. Memorable stories are often the simplest ones and that's how fables, folk legends, and fairy tales often survive the test of time. Shrek with a twist of irony, has become a modern-day fable of its own. The animation, while it may seem dated to some, I find it exactly what it needs to be and a few flaws that are present feel pointless to be picky about it. Gotta say I love this 'whirlwind adventure'.

I put my review behind spoilers, although I presume everyone has already seen who wanted to. I saw _Shrek_ already 5 or 6 times, but my last watch was ages ago. After all these times I still adore it for its inventiveness, which means it makes fun of fairy tales and turns upside down the tropes of a simple damsel in distress situation. Furthermore, it's bold. The bird was exploded, Robin Hood and his gang got beaten up, reptiles were made into balloons and the king was eaten. Still a classic animation!

Beautiful movie, a real modern-day fairy tail.

This movie showed that Pixar wasn't the only one who could make top-notch CGI movies that had a good animation quality and a fantastic story attached to it.

Too bad that the producers milked it completely dry. They should have stopped after the second movie, when it was still good.

Despite the
bukakke
of late-90s pop culture references *really* aging this, the movie is still one of the most creative spins on fairy tales since The Princess Bride. And, *honestly,* given how long this was in development -- began in 1995 when Spielberg wanted to adapt the book as a traditionally animated film -- the 90s pop culture references aren't *that* big of a deal. Kinda makes it a charming time capsule of late-90s/early-aughts pop culture.

*Especially* the bullet time mid-air kick Fiona does on the Merry Men, being *the* most overused action trope after The Matrix; the first Scary Movie even got in on it, LMAO.

Probably one of the most important films in cinema. It paved for what animated movies will become, even if most animated films nowadays aren't that good.

Shrek has one of the best movie soundtracks from the early 2000s: All Star, I’m a Believer, Hallelujah and Bad Reputation are some songs that I listened frantically on my MP3 player as a child.

I saw this movie a ton as a kid and loved it. I had the soundtrack too and listened to All Star and I'm a Believer non stop. Revisiting this now it still is great and a lot of fun. I remembered a lot of it and still quote it sometimes.

A smart, funny, and endearing modern day fairy story movie which manages to be as popular with adults as it is with children.

It's cute, it's funny, not your typical story and makes me feel old. 20 years ago? REALLY? Also, the soundtrack is good!
