A movie like this just offends Post-Millennials, thus the low rating. However, for those of us who lived through the time of change, and the following decades, it speaks truth to power where we once were and how far we've receded the past 20 years in the fight for equal rights. Eli (Morgan Auld), a young Jewish man from Brooklyn travels to a predominantly black college in Tennessee during the mid-late 60s in pursuit of a Medical Degree. Trapped between being too white for the students and being too ethnic for the local whites, Eli must hammer out a niche for himself as he struggles to understand why he wants to be a doctor. As the movie progresses, eyes on all sides become opened, sometimes under duress and other times through shared strife. Boys become men, racists (both black and white) learn to see beyond the color of one's skin and the simple interaction of treating each person as an individual (gasp...color blindness), somehow, some way, most people find a way to simply get along. If you've been indoctrinated by the overlords, you will just want to find a safe space and curl up in a corner. If you have an open mind and actually follow the teachings of Dr. King, you'll find yourself cheering as the credits roll. Either way, this is an educational film above the hype of modern Hollywood and the Political Left that should be required viewing in every High School History Class (if it wasn't for the gratuitous use of colorful metaphors) for educational purposes. Believe it or not, we all actually can get along.
