Seasoned adventurer and treasure hunter Dirk Pitt, a former Navy SEAL, sets out for the African desert with his wisecracking buddy Al in search of a confederate ironclad battleship rumored to have vanished long ago, the main draw being the treasure supposedly hidden within the lost vessel. When the daring duo come across Dr. Eva Rojas, a beautiful scientist who is juggling an escape from a warlord and a mission to stop the spread of a powerful plague, their desert expedition begins to heat up.

Now this is your typical I-don't-have-anything-better-to-do-tonight-so-let's-just-watch-this movie. Everything about it is average: the story, the acting, the music etc. It does have a feelgood vibe about it, with suntanned people running around on yachts and beaches, so it makes for some decent entertainment.

The thing that bothered me was the fact that the treasure hunting wasn't the main focus of the movie despite so much buildup, including the summary and trailer for the movie. The discovery of the wreck was both unexciting and you don't get a clear reason for what happened to it. The movie ends with a lot of questions left unanswered and the second story point, [spoiler]the poisoned water[/spoiler], greatly overshadows the shipwreck. If they had stuck with one or the other it would have been a good movie.

Let's reassess this film shall we? Rather than thinking of it in the vein of Indiana Jones, let's see it for what it really was... The genesis of the 'Uncharted' video game series. And to anyone who just watched that film with a pleasant Tom Holland and a limp Mark Wahlberg, then you need to watch this instead. This is the closest you'll get to a true "Nathan Drake" if it took 15 years to bring Uncharted to our screens. Little did we know that the best Uncharted film had been made 2 years before the game. Practical effects, a swashbuckling soundtrack, humour, locations... It has them all. The plot could be a little tighter and Penelope Cruz's accent could be a little less one-dimensional but they're by the by... This film deserves reappraising. 7.5/10

On the surface, this looks like this film has the potential to be the next fun action adventure, like the Mummy. Unfortunately, it is hard to make poverty and plague sexy and fun. I'm sure the book was a fun read.

+ Features a good amount of exciting action scenes that keep you watching until the end.
+ The somewhat realistic take on treasure hunting makes this film stand out from its brothers and sisters.

Decent watch, might watch again, but can't recommend unless you're running out of things to watch or are an action archaeology fan.

This was a weird attempt created a 2005 version of Indiana Jones, or, since this is in Africa, Alex Quartermaine with Matthew McConaughey, of all people. I'm not aw More

Words like "Literary work" and "Clive Cussler" really shouldn't be in the same sentence.

Hey...chill...I love Clive Cussler, I honestly do. In fact I'll put him in the same league as Elmore Leonard and Louis L'Amour and I will put them in the same league as Dumas and Doyle.
