Film 125 (Goal: 300) of 2024:

Role Play is the newest addition into the already tired genre of finding out your partner has a double life, with perhaps the standout being James Cameron's True Lies. This is not that. This is tired and bland. My enjoyment of this film, of which was pretty fleeting, comes predominantly from the scenes that Bill Nighy is in. He's here for a good time, not a long time and as usual, he's the best thing in any scene he's in.

I like Kaley Cuoco - always have. But I could not connect with her character at all. David Oyelowo is a fantastic actor but he's not given anything to do here. He's potential is just wasted. Connie Nielsen is God awful, with her delivery of lines being stone faced and life less. This wooden performance is compounded in the ultimately forgettable 3rd act. The film, which earlier had sparingly decent moments forgoes that for a slog of a finale.

Role Play joins a long list of streaming comedies (though this may be considered more of an action-comedy, despite it being light on both) that fail to leave a mark, a worrying trend for comedies all round.
