If they really had to remake Psycho; then they should have just adapted the book more closely. With Norman older and Marion's head cut off in the shower. Otherwise a shot by shot remake is just a waste of our time and Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting) only testing his abilities as a filmmaker. Just because Sant was nominated the previous year; I guess he thought that meant he was as good as Hitchcock. The casting is just awful. Vince Vaughn looks lost on what to do with the part of Norma. Anne Heche looks just as lost on what to do with Marion. The rest of the cast do better but are mostly mis-cast as well. Just stick with the original.

It's an interesting experiment in film, but ends up being totally pointless. It's not offensive to the legacy of the original, but it adds nothing to it. An ill advised test.

I just finished Psycho (1998), and while I haven’t seen the original, I can say this version was good, but not great. The story itself holds up well—there’s a reason Psycho is a classic. Some parts were intense but I did not get the thrill I had been anticipating. Vince Vaughn as Norman Bates was an interesting choice.

The 1998 remake of "Psycho" by Gus Van Sant is a visually striking homage to Hitchcock's masterpiece, which remains a perfect 10 out of 10. Vince Vaughn delivers a commendable performance as Norman Bates, while Anne Heche embodies 90s beauty with her chic short haircut. The vibrant colors and subtle modern updates are well-executed, making the film feel contemporary. Despite its faithfulness to the original, it stands as a unique experiment in cinema. As the film reminds us, "A boy's best friend is his mother".

Horror fans really should thank Gus Van Sant for his experimental "copy exactly" approach to re-making the horror classic Psycho. Filmmakers have learned that just modernizing the original with a bigger budget takes no creativity and falls into tedium and redundancy which most horror fan's hate. Gus More
