There are areas where this movie shines, and others where it falls apart.

The Pokémon themselves, perfect. The models, the textures, the way they move. They look and behave in a believable way. If this movie was purely to show off how to correctly model Pokémon, then I'd say they nailed it.

The world itself seemed well done, but very little was fleshed out - you're given a general overview, which makes sense as the majority of the world of Pokémon [spoiler]isn't relevant to the core story[/spoiler]. It's a "good enough" summary that someone who doesn't know of Pokémon will understand enough to watch this movie, but not enough to be pulled in to another one.

In terms of the story, it has its high notes. [spoiler]Pikachu not knowing what to do after the Pokémon battle stood out to me, as did his walk-off when things went sideways and he no longer believed in himself[/spoiler]. It also feels like Tim's affection for Lucy was either a late addition or added "just because". [spoiler]It never led to anything, and after the big battle, Lucy is told that she'll be on TV and that's where they end the story for her. The epilogue made no mention of her. It's like the writers forgot she existed because her core arch was finished[/spoiler].

Overall I enjoyed the movie, and I'd watch it again: mainly to see what other Pokémon were hiding in the background shots.

Bonus: the credits were pretty cool, and I'd love to see the soundtrack released.
