Anna and Will, were each other’s first every-things: first kiss, first love, first and only relationship. Now, 10 years in, at Anna’s 30th birthday party, as Will is about to propose, the couple’s best friend makes a drunken toast, suggesting that they should sleep around before their inevitable marriage. The joke lands like a lead balloon, but the thought lingers until Anna proposes that they try opening their relationship – as a sexual experiment.

Although Stevens and Hall are magnificent, as usual, the film has nothing new to say. Furthermore, the dialogue feels heavy-handed and forced, meaning we never quite buy into the relationship dramas that form the crux of the story.

The premise has been done many times before: a couple on the verge of marriage starts to question their relationship. And by "question", they are thinking of seeing other people. It plays out in a fairly predictable way. The movie is *fine* - nothing more, nothing less. I think that they did the ending exactly how it should have been. All I have to say about this movie is that "Newness" did it better. Skip this one and go watch that.

Insipid tripe, Permission is yet another Hollywood assault on monogamy. The story follows a young couple that gives each other permission to have sex with other people in order to decide whether or not they truly want to be together. And it goes pretty much as one would suspect, as every other movie about couples giving a pass to their partners goes. There are some decent actors in the cast, Rebecca Hall, Gina Gershon, Jason Sudeikis, but there aren’t any good performances. And the directing is weak as well; as there’s nothing sensual or suspenseful about the affairs. Permission is an incredibly dull and formulaic movie that doesn’t do anything new or interesting with this well wore material.
