I saw "Opera" in a double feature with Dario Argento's "Suspiria." In this comparison, "Opera" clearly draws the short straw for me. Above all, I miss the surrealistic elements of "Suspiria." In contrast, the characters behave even more stupidly. Some of the dialog is pretty funny, but this was probably not intentional.

Nevertheless, the movie is entertaining, despite its weaknesses. There is plenty of tension, and the whole structure is certainly much more accessible than in "Suspiria." Ultimately, the movie follows a relatively standard formula. However, I would definitely exclude the movie's absurd epilogue from this assessment. I have no idea what the hell Argento was thinking, but I have to admit that it's probably my favorite part of the film. So it's definitely worth sticking with it until the very end.
