I saw "Opera" in a double feature with Dario Argento's "Suspiria." In this comparison, "Opera" clearly draws the short straw for me. Above all, I miss the surrealistic elements of "Suspiria." In contrast, the characters behave even more stupidly. Some of the dialog is pretty funny, but this was probably not intentional. Nevertheless, the movie is entertaining, despite its weaknesses. There is plenty of tension, and the whole structure is certainly much more accessible than in "Suspiria." Ultimately, the movie follows a relatively standard formula. However, I would definitely exclude the movie's absurd epilogue from this assessment. I have no idea what the hell Argento was thinking, but I have to admit that it's probably my favorite part of the film. So it's definitely worth sticking with it until the very end.

"So I was shooting this movie in Italy, then I went on vacation in the alps and forgot about it, then I remembered I had to finish it and we shot the end in the back yard of the restaurant where I had a nice apfelstrüdel lol nothing matters who needs a script". Dario I love you, you have some chops, but seriously?

I am certain this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but I was left very dissatisfied with this movie! While visually stunning, even for an director known for a visually stunning and flamboyant style, I felt that the movie really lacked in several key elements, two of which were a plot that makes sense and relatable characters. I understand that the Genesis of the movie was based on Argento's unsuccessful career as director for operas. The notion that he would like to tie up his harshest critics and force them to watch the slaughter of their loved ones does not make the film any more palatable to me.

Opera is by many regarded as the last good Argento film, and even though there are some exceptions to that rule, they are largely right. The filming in Opera is something quite unlike what Argento has done before. More fluid, with long point-of-view shots, and an excellent use of light and shadows. More

Opera was my first Dario Argento movie and I am really happy that this was the case. Probably wouldn't have been that interested in Argento if it was another movie of his, because I don't like all of his work; this one however, is in my opinion up to now the best movie I know by him.
